I've always dreamt of having a thread in the micro forum...

As you can see all of my pics are badly photoshopped. this is because they are not real. everything in this thread is hypothetical, at best.

The person tending to these plants is probably a beginner who's done a fair bit of reading on the subject, yet is bound to this hobby provided its financial burden can remain minimal.

said "hypothetical setup" could be represented as follows:

Cab
8"w... 18"d... 24"h
70w hps
supplemental cfl's (30watt atm)

Dirt
50/50
Crappy pro mix with polymer crystals
scott's cactus soil

Ventalation
6" exhaust fan. (150cfm approx)
8" intake area

Temps:
First few days the temps skyrocketed.
113*F was the highest recorded
Since ventalation was installed, temps never exceed 85*F
Usually stay between 75-85

Nutes:
None at present
looking for something simple that could be had from casa depot or the like.

Glad you're growing! My first attempts(still attempting!) failed badly. Be tenacious though!

There were several reasons that my grows went so poorly, but the main thing was over watering. I watered once a day in those cups and it isn't needed. I'm not saying that's you're problem, but that's what kept my plants that size when I first started.

Also try to get that light at about 1 inch away from the top of the plant if it's do-able.

Go to Casa Depot and buy organic fertlizer. its called terracycle, and it comes in recycled 2 liter bottles and u just pour it into the soil. great stuff for a beginner like u and me IMO.

I've heard about overwatering issues that most beginners have and i've tried to lean on the light side, however it could very well be the problem due to the poor aeration i have in the soil.

havent worked out a steady watering schedule as of yet (usually go by the top couple inches being dry...), but i've been keeping about 10% of the container size worth of runoff in hopes that they dont drown themselves in the aftermath.

As for the distance to the plant, the HPS chart said to keep it 3-6" IIRC, so i'm right on the money with that, but ill try and angle the CFL over a bit while keepin it in front of the fan as much as possible.

Good looking out on the ferts! organic is definitely the direction i'd like to go (though i think there's chemmies in the soil.. but meh...).

No mixing at all? do you just replace your water with it, alternate, or what?

i dont have any myself, but i read the bottle, and it said just "pour into soil" or something like that, it has water in it already, so i dont you will have a problem, if u pick some up, just read the bottle, and it'll clarify my comment. nvm, got the specs right here...

I'll have a look the next time i go to H.D. Sometimes they got everything under the sun, and sometimes they got absolutely nothing.

I actually just found some Schultz cactus food (hey i'm just throwin this out there), its 2-7-7. I know thats more of a flowering fert, but would it work ok in a weak dose for the earlier stages of veg?

thats for HPS bulbs they run alot higher temps than your regular cfl .....

you can afford to get a little bit closer

ph-ing for your first grow isnt that necceasary
nor are organic nutes unless you happen to know what the plant needs

that cactus food seems to be weak (2/7/7)

for veg I would say (14/6/17) and flower (10/9/19)
and I would ph the water with nutes if I were you otherwise
they can cause more probs than good

certain strains respond better to more or less nutes

Any normal soil should have enough to sustain a plant for 3-4 months if not more

although I would reccomend ... some perlite or some grit/sand in the soil to help with aereation / drainage
and watering from the bottom up ... with a tray underneath ... seems to work

any way .... have a fun grow and its all about learning : )
