hi
i am on my way to finishin my first grow with a 250w hps in a closet
my local hydroshop offers an upgrade for the ballast+ the lamp from 250w to 400w
my question is will the 400w be ok in a closet ?
has anyone tried it?

without really good venting it will be hot in there!

how about a closed reflector? they have one with a hole in it that u can connect a tube to vantilate the hot air

cooltube/dome would be a must, that and fresh air intake. if your ambient temps are below 70f you should be ok without AC.

Its totally doable, depending on what size your cabinet is?
As suggested above, the light will have to be aircooled somehow, or you must have a BIG fan (5" min depending on the dimesions of your cabinet).
I am currently using a 400w in a cooltube in a small cabinet 0.5m(d) x 1m(w) x 1.6m(h) with a 4" fan and its running fine, but i dont have a carbon scrubber (yet), if i did and when i do have one, i will need a 5" fan to succesfully pull enough air to keep the temps down...

tokabowl, why don't you use seperate air circulation for your cooltube? at one side of the growbox you put your intake vent, connect it to the cooltube, at the other side of cooltube you make exhaust with vent. the air that goes throug the tube has no connection with your grow air. for best results, i'd use it in the same horizontal level - the way that air does is as straight as possible. my suggestion
then you have to make the air circulation for your plants - intake at the bottom, exhaust with the carbon filter at the top. if you don't want your neighbours or visitors to smell your growbox, carbon filter is a must.

I have seen 1000w in a closet, its no biggie just figure out how you gonna control your temps. A 400w hps fits great into a cool tube. If that dont work for you, smoke a little of that funky stuff, surf the forms for a minute and an idea will come to you.

any ways iv decided to stick with my 250w hps saves more power i geuss+ the plants seems to enjoy it + i wanna start a new micro grow project
the closet wouldnt work for me any more

As far as the grow goes, buy your self a nice piece of furnature and pimp it out, suprise us!
