Advice from Micro-Grow Guru's Required.
Hi all,
I just recently joined the forums and before I continue would like to say what a great place you guy's have got here. I was never really too interested in micro-growing before, but after seeing some of the cab's and results you guy's are getting I am now seriously considering it. It's more stealthy and easier to hide and still produces enough for personal, and that is exactly what I am looking for. I only fairly recently started growing maybe about a year or so ago, just started on my 4th grow. My current set up is a converted 3 door drobe using a 400 watt HPS for flower and a 125 watt envirolight for veg. I am looking to scale down my set up but still need to produce enough to keep me smoking. So I was considering using kitchen cabinet base unit's. Using the two door cab for flowering and using two single door cab's for veging mothers and clones and the other to keep as a utility area, fans, electrics etc. I have only really measured the dimmensions of one of my own kitchen base units, the two door version (proposed flower section) because if I can flower in those dimmensions then I will be able to veg in the same or smaller. Inside Dimmensions are - (H) 27.5 inches 70cm (W) 38 inches 96.5cm (Depth) 19.5 inches 49.5cm Could I flower in a space that small ?? I was wanting to use really small 13cm square 13cm high (1.5ltr pots) would these be o.k or are they too small ?? I would also like to use my 400 watt HPS in the cab. I do use a cool tube and have a very powerful acoustic box fan to vent the cooltube with, would it be o.k or would it just be too strong for such a space ?? Many Thanks in advance to any responses, a possible "micro" newbie |

Thanks Darren, that's why I am looking more favourable'y towards micro growing. Not huge yields but enough to keep you smoking and keep the Mrs from being paranoid about this drobe making noises....lol.

thats alot of light for such a small space, but with the right ventilation you just may be able to pull it off.
i use a 150hps in a cab thats 23"w x 17d x 35" tall inside imho youll be hard pressed to do it. you gotta figure the best way would be scrog...so , consider container height , height to screen and then height to light...........it will be incredibly tight. you may consider a taller cab or smaller light. 150 hps scrog |

I would say the amount of ventilation required to keep a 400watt cool in that space would be very noticeable, I think ultimately it'd be possible but you'd have one noisy kitchen
if thats not important then I think a dedicated inline fan and cooltube for the light would be required in addition to a dedicated inline for air exchange, direct intake from a cool air source like outside and likewise for exhaust. You run the risk of having too much light in that sort of space too. All in all i'd be tempted to downgrade to a 250watt at most for the space, but if you're feeling determined then it'd be a decent challenge to undertake

Thanks for the input Waydee.
I really want to try and keep it as stealth as poss, as I want to place the unit in my garden shed which is right next to the garden fence between my garden and the next door neighbours garden. The gardens are quite small as I am only quite a poor dude living in the U.K. The air-force fans I use at the moment are square box acoustic fans they are quite quiet and reasonably powerful. wwwairforcesystems.com/tornado.html So I was thinking of using a smaller cabinet measuring 60cm x 60cm x 70cm high, to house one or two of those fans in along with other electrics etc and then I found some reasonably priced acoustic/sound-proofing membranes or panels that I was thinking I could use to line the inside of the utility cab to further reduce the hum of the fans. I already got a 125mm Cool-Tube, so I was thinking use 1 of my airforce fans dedicated to cooling the cool-tube and use the other airforce to suck the stale air out and suck fresh air in via a couple of darkroom louvres used as passive intakes. What do you think ??? |

It looks to me like you've got the necessary equipment but i'm in no way experienced with growing in small places, nothing with that amount of light anyway
i'm hesitant to say it'd work but i'm of the belief that with the right equipment you can make anything work.I suppose theres nothing stopping you getting it set up and seeing what sort of temps you run - switching out a ballast and bulb for a 250watt setup isn't a huge amount of hassle even if it doesnt work out but I can understand you wanting to stick with your current equipment. The cooltube is your real asset and for that reason alone i'd say give it a shot - get some more opinions first though, i'd hate for you to waste your time and effort. edit: i've just started a grow in a similar sized space but with a lot less light (220w), i'm using a 5" fan and filter and its pumping a lot of heat out of the cabinet. Obviously a cooltube setup with a dedicated fan would be a lot more efficient but you're definately going to be right on the edge of acceptable temperatures!
