Germination question
I am planning on planting a few seeds soon and I have a question about germination.
According to mike's tips he says to germinate the seeds directly in the medium and not use a pre-germination method, suchas a moist paper towel because it can damage the taproot. So I plant the seed about 1 inch deep in moist soil, do I put light over the seed or just let it sit there? I know you give it light once it sprouts, but is it needed before it sprouts while it's germinating? Last edited by ezbake; 01-05-2007 at 02:19 AM.. |

Just put em in soil, put some water, cover the pots with saran wrap, and let them sit in the dark until they spout out of the soil. Then remove the saran wrap and put the lights on.

Once you water the pots after planting your seed you put them somewhere at room temp. 25°C and wait till they sprout. As soon as the first seedlings sprout you should move them under a lamp. If it's too cold in your space you need to switch on your lamp to provide warmth or use a heating mat.
Some people cover the pots with a glass or foil. But I have seen seeds rot away when novice growers did it because the soil has to breathe. If the soil dries too much you should water again - use a spoon to prevent overwatering. Spraying water on the pots is not particularly effective if the cup is too dry. Just make sure the soil is never soggy/dripping wet and put 1-2 holes in the bottom of the cup for drainage (makes sense, but some growers forget!). Good luck with your grow! Mike

I like to germinate seeds by starting them in soil or a peat pellet. I used to do the paper towel method, but find this way to work better for me.

I used peat pellets my 2nd grow and I didn't plan very well... It was just bad...
Ok The peat pellets germed them in a few days but I didnt have soil or money to buy soil... So i had to keep em in the pellets for like a week LOL They grew to be about 2-4 inches tall if not biiger in the peat pellets, and the roots were just overflowing from the bottom of the pellets lol. LOL and this is the best part, I was using the regular flourescent bulbs for your regular lights, like 15 watts... HAHAHAHA i crack up everytime i think about this... classic case of being too damn excited and not thinking, planning, or waiting, or doing anything remotely smart for that matter Good thing it was bag seed from some mid-grades They went outside and pretty much failed to make a long story short

ezbake, yea funny how the excitement can cloud the thinking. Better luck on your next try
hey, how about a seedling tray filled with a mixture of 50/50 fine perlite/pro mix set on a propagation mat - get the kind of tray with holes so there's good drainage as a general rule seed should be covered with soil at the dept of twice the diameter of the seed - hand tamp to get good root to soil contact soak Cannabis seeds in non clorinated water for 6-12 hours only! You're not looking for radicle emergence just for the beans start to take on water and begin to sink and no more get a pair of bricks and a 4' flourescent shop light (80 watts total) and get the bulbs right above the tray - keep the temp steady at 80F degrees ( 27C) The seedlings should be ready to prick out bare root at 7 days forget the paper towel germination method, that's just for testing germination and was never meant for seed that's going to be planted seed should be cold stratifed in the refrigerator for at least 48 hours prior to germination a little Nitrogen helps germination, but not too much Mike hides the germination link on his site but here it is:https://mandalaseeds.com/html/germination.html I store my beans in a moson jar with some rice in the refrigerator. I guess the problem with freezing is breakage so don't let the frige freeze can't wait to grow our the Mike's Speed Queen, aka "white cloud" peace out, barn |
