Very productive for the tops! Not sure how it will affect final yield though. I'm pretty sure that I read in high times an artical called supercropping. I want to say it increased the yield like 20% in their case. I'm sure it's not a dead figure though.
Hard for me to show you, but when a new node starts, you'll get that tear drop shape of the two new leaves forming. Look close, and spread the old node's leaves so that you don't damage them, exposing the new node. Clip just above the base of the tear drop. Not cutting the tear drop off completely, just 95% of it. After a few days, you'll see 2 new branches start out of the little nub left behind. Takes a little practice. Results are pretty obvious though. I've got some that I mucked up somehow and have 3 and 4 branches starting. Wish I knew what I did! Here are a couple of my topped and tied down troublemakers. On one of the plants I've got nearly 30-35 tops. Insane shit. But will they all grow heavier than one nice cola with some huge side shoots, I don't know. I hope so... The group - all topped and tied. This is only HALF the strings per plant. LOL, yeah, I'm bored... |

what strain?
It all depends on pheno and strain as different every strain responds differently. some topping makes them go crazy and its recomended, others no way! How far in veg are they or are you in flower? Is it a brancher? Do you see side shoots yet? Topping is for veg, it takes off the top main stem or cola to restrict hieght and or increase branching and side growth by energy coversion to those areas. Wait untill your plant is at least around 7 or 8 nodes up main stem,(allthough the plant strain, pheno, height, and overall growth patterns determins this) count 2 or 3 down and cut sharp with clean razor at 45 degree angel close right above next node. carefull to only cut stalk and no veg matter! If you are feeling dangerious you can be careful and root that piece if ya want depending on how thick it is and what not.... Have fun!

spacedcwby: the 3 or 4 branch "mistake" you made was probably FIMing. do a search on it if ya feel it, its just a method of topping where the node is cut partly off so that 4-8 new braches form insted of just 2 new ones.

It's in flower now? I'm not so sure you want to do that now, it's a method used in veg as far as I know. Hold off until someone else posts that knows for sure.

Ideally you want to cut in veg because it takes the plant some time to recooperate after the cut. But it will work and probably wont affect the plant too much this early in flower.
If you cut the new growth in between the two branches then the plant will concentrate its energies toward those two budsites. This wont necessarily increase yield even though you have two tops instead of one. The plant is still outputting the same amount of energy, its just diverted to two colas instead of one. Make sense? Good luck.
