How Cold is Too Cold?

My first grow. Using the Red's Rubbermaid Stealth design. I only have 10 seeds (thanks to customs for jacking half my order.) I started germinating 2 seeds, both popped within 48 hours. I have them in 16oz plastic cups. The soil on the bottom was a little to wet and clumpy but seems to be drying out, the soil on top is a little looser.

My question is how cold does it have to get for me to expect failure? The 2 cups are in the grow box now, with 6x23w CFLs about 3-4 inches away. THe temp is around 80 deg F. The air temp in the room is about 55-60 Deg F.

The seeds have 2 layers of towels on top and i duct taped the sides to prevent light from getting in. Once the leaves pop out from the soil I will remove the towels and expose them to light, but I would like to limit the light to 3x23w cfl. With 3x23 watt cfl, the air temp drops to 77 def F.

I will post pics once some leaves pop out...hopefully soon. I plan on asking further questions as this is my first grow.

SHould I buy some sort of space heater for this closet?

when their young your box temp at 77 is perfect. when they get older they can handle colder temp's like 50 just fine. i'd up your wattage come flowering time though. good luck.

I will def up the wattage when it comes time. I have 6x42 clfs ready to go. I am just afraid the current temps maybe too cold for the stems to pop through. I will have a look at them tonight and mark their progress.

I use Hydro, and 50's was bad news, not sure on the specific's of soil, but I can't imagine it's gonna be good for them...

you cpuld get a little heater from walmart or something, like desktop size even.
or get some crazy HPS lights,

if the seeds are already germinated why do you have paper towel covering them in the cups ? i'm fairly new at this so i am just asking . i think the emerging shoots will be wanting some light and fresh air . anybody wanna chime in, please do.

I removed 3 of the of 23 watt cfls. I have exposed them to the lights and this seems to have encouraged the first set of leaves to pop out. I have 2 cups on a drip pan, and the thermometer at the bottom of that drip pan. THis morning the temp was 73 deg F.

The heat was off most of the night. I am going to add one more bulb for a total of 4x23 watt cfls. I am trying to keep the heat above 70 deg F, once i have all 6 lights in place I am sure that won't be a problem.

Cooler temps slow growth. Soil acts as an insulation to the roots in colder temps, hydro will get as cold as the room temps and 50 is too cold. My room gets down to 60 at night and that is as cold as I like for hydro. My soil plants are in a box that is 80 during lights on and 65 during lights out. Hope this helps.

almost 2 weeks

I don't think I have watered them since Dec 9. They are growing, not sure if they are stretching too much though. The new leaves both kinda have this V shape going on. The cotlydons are curling. Temps are in the 80s. I dont have the heat shield on yet. No roots coming through yet either. I trimmed the top 20% of the cups off, to see if this helps them get more light. I check them once in the morning and once before I go to bed. Have a look, let me know if I am falling into any first timer traps.
