AK-48 & NL - CFLs - First Grow!
Hey folks. I know I previously stated somewhere on this board that I wasn't giong to start a topic about my grow until I was able access a camera. However I just started it and I'm pretty anxious about the progress and I would like to log it. I suppose here would be the best place. Thus starts my growlog and pictures should start to appear after Christmas.
I'm another one Red_Greenery's followers. I'm sporting the 'Maid' in all her beauty! She helps me through my hard times. :P Well she will be from now on. First grow as I stated in the title. I have previously grown mushrooms before this so I know all about secracy and such. On a side note - I think growers alike, mushroom growers and cannibis growers, could learn a lot from each other. Right now I'm sporting the two rubber maid tub system. Both are wrapped in 1 layer of mylar. One of the tubs is cut horizontally in half and is skewered through an overly large sheet of plexiglass. Above the plexiglass is a thee socket bathroom fixture held(138 watts - Soft White CFL) up by cat-5 cables. Hehe work with what you have. They didn't melted during testing! That's because I have light chamber regulated by 4 inch fan pulling air from the chamber. I have one large light leak and it's because of the intake hole on the top. I need to be able to reach in there when flowering comes to put 4 x 42 watters in there. On the top of the upper tub is mounted by a carbonscrubber/air conditioner that runs two 5 inch ducting tubes down to the grow section(Can be see in Red's thread). The virtical grow space is 25 inches. The bottom tub has an intake port with a light trap on it on the very bottom corner. Also this thing is held together entirely by duct tape. It's quite hard to maintain because the adheasive on the tape is much less effective in a heated enviornment. Dec 5, 2006(Yesterday) I recieved my prescioius package in the mail from Seed Botique. It was excellently packaged. I was ultimately suprised the most by the fact that they threw in 2 freebies(Skunk #1 and South African DP X Skunk #1). However I come read that the South African DP has shitty germ ratios because of its age. No worries because my ordered items were NRS Ak-48 and NRS Northern Lights. For some reason the AK-48 seemed right for the first time. At least that's the feeling I went with. I come to learn it is a short Sativa. I hope I don't have problems with spacing in 25 inches of space. I popped 4 seeds into tap water(previously left out for 24 hours). The tap water here is around 6.2-6.5, more frequently 3.2ish. Dec 6, 2006 Today I checked the seeds and they were all pushing out their white 'baby' root. So I gently planted each seed in a soil filled "Solo" cup. I use Expert Gardener's - Perfect Mix Potting Soil, Vermiculite, and Perlite in a 2-1-1 Ratio. Watered them with a spray bottle and placed them into their new home for the next few weeks. I hope I see rapid growth on these babies! I'll update when something noteworthy occurs. They're under 24 hour light(138 watts). I only plan to keep two of the plants and of those two(assuming I get enough females) I will be ScrOG them. Not sure how long a good veg time is for these. I'm thinking at least 4 or 5 weeks. Opinon's always welcome. I have one question - Is there a reason you would want to do 18/6(on/off) when vegging opposed to doing 24/0? Last edited by Budless; 12-12-2006 at 11:38 AM.. |

I'm pulling up a chair - I've just started same product.
I have and will use 24/0 for first week or so - seedlings don't need the dark cycle (or so I've read/heard). I'm going 12/12 within 2 - 3 weeks, so it will be interesting to see how the grows compare. Good luck dude ws |

I'm making this post in the whee hours of the morning in the midst of studying. I'm currnetly battling dryness issues with the soil with my tub. For me to keep my soil moist on a consistant basis I will have to water it twice a day. Watering my plants twice a day poses a problem for both me and the plant. For me it's a hassle. It's a hassle I really would rather not undertake during the holiday season. For the plant, or plant hopefuls, it's causing them hardship in the soil and it will not promote good root growth later on. I supsect my problem lies in the two-fan system I use. The warm air from the light-attic space and the room temperature air are being consistantly moved through out the tub and back into the room. That wouldn't be so much of a problem if my growbox wasn't in a closet that is closed off. I have no way to vent the warm air from the room it's in right now and thats my main problem right now. As of late I have found my babies(perhaps lack of now) with dry soil. Not cool. So right now I'm running through a list of fixes I could employ. Moving the tub out of the room it's in isn't an option. The walls in the room are flush and cannot be altered as this property doesn't belong in full to me. However the box can be modded and the closet has some extra space in it. Please throw every idea you have at me! I'll take them all into consideration. |

Perhaps setting up a wick watering - having a second tub under the first, with a heavy cotton wick (lamp wick) drawing water up and into the soil.
This is a fairly common arrangement in growing. I'm a little tired myself - typing this from work on my break, but look into it. Good luck - keep us posted. ws |

Dec 8, 2006 - Continued
Just went to check on the dryness past 6 hours under the light and I noticed all 4 seeds were pushing through. They all seem to be running on a common rate of growth. I'm glad to see the plant is resilliant enough to survive a small drought early on. My current mood is optimistic and happy. |

I have been frequently checking my babies. For a head count I currently have 3 sprouting seeds and 1 seedling. The one seedling I have is growing really fast and it currently has it's first leaves forming. It's a beautiful dark green. One of my sprouding seeds is close behind, but the shell looks like it will be hard to remove, so I'm going to let it do it's own thing right now. My other two sprouts are struggling, but I'm going to keep tending to them. I hope this vigorous plant continues on it's path and I hope he or she is really a she :P. Right now they are on 24/0 lighting. I'll probably change it in two weeks or so. I hope that the 18/6 will help keep the dryness issue to a minimum. Last edited by Budless; 12-10-2006 at 11:41 PM.. |

Out of the 4 seeds I planted 2 survived. In a freak accedent I killed one today, however it was a runt compared to the most vigorous plant. None-the-less I'm kind of excited b/c I can plant something else in it's wake. I debated between NL and Skunk #1, but I decided to throw down the NL for the sake of having a nice solid plant. :P I'm germing 3 seeds ATM and I'll plant them when they germinate. BTW the Ak-48 survivor is starting on its second pair of true leaves! W00t! |
