ernest's first micro grow
so i planted these seeds i got from my friend who had a plant that was a hermie and it was a purple strain that had very purple leaves and some purple bud. i created this janky box setup made with a wicker box lined with black paper to fill leaks and aluninum foil to reflect. currently i have 2 26watt cfls running through one ballast.
here are pictures of the first four seedlings, the one on the right is 3 1/2 weeks old, and still very small, the one on the left is the same strain and is about 2 1/2 weeks old, and the one on the top is a different strain which is 3-4 days old and growing A LOT faster. here are some more pics of the 3 1/2 old one, doesnt this seem to be very unusual? the leaves are yellow, but i think that might be due to using miracle grow potting soil (all i had). it seems so small and compact, and it's growing very SLOWWW. this one seems to have a bit of mold or something growing at the bottom of the container in the soil....suggestions to fix this problem? ps. the purple strain plant that i got the seeds from is a hermie...does this matter? |

with the mold problem, you're probably not letting the soil dry out enough between waterings and you need to cover it up to keep the light out. I'm not sure if the wicker basket is for stealth or what, but you might want to rethink that wicker lined with paper idea. I know you already have it assembled, but you might want to go with a less fire-prone design. stealth won't matter if you come home and your house is on fire. not to bash your design, just don't want a fellow grower to get hurt

get rid of that foil, it is doing very little good. foil isnt a good reflective surface as you might think. go to walmart and get an emergency blanket in the camping section, works MUCH better and is only like $3. dont know much about soil but miracle grow has i think too strong of nutes for seedlings. repot them in a different soil and they should be fine. step on over to the soil forum for more advice on that unless someone chimes in here. otherwise looks good so far. what are you doing for ventilation and odor control?

well, as for ventilation, i usually leave the box open and i have a fan that can rest over the top and get some good air flow going. odor control isnt going to be much of a problem.
my question, though, is that these seedlings are on 24-0...could this or the miriclegro soil be the reason why the plants are growing so slow? |

I've put my last seedlings on 24/0 for the first 2 weeks with no problems.. I dont think its that. Putting a seedling in miracle grow is like trying to feed a newborn baby a steak. The mold on the soil may be telling you your watering too much, and too much water isn't good for young plants either.
