the question i have is how close can lights be to plants if the light is vented well enough so that its cool?

I have a 600watt hps just sitting here but i'm in an apt and get bored sometimes .

any ideas?

I've seen plants touching the cool tube of a 1kw HPS, so I'd say with correct ventilation, your concerns wouldn't be burning, they would be light bleaching.

wait.... Bleaching? could you go into more deatail. is that a good thing like with socks?

8 inches of ducting and an 8 inch fan should cool a 600 in any space. no matter how small.

i run a 600 with 6 inch ducting and 6" vortex and have no temp issues.

but yeah light bleaching is when the plants are exposed to too much light energy. it will actually kind of bleach the leaves white in spots. bad hoods that concentrate light in certain spots are terrible culprits of this. also getting a plant too close to a 1000w can expose it to more than the plant would get in full blown sunlight which can quickly become too much light. 600w seem to make a little under a full blown sun exposure at any distance so as long as there is no strange concentration you should be okay.

i like to keep my 600 about 12-18 inches away from the light anyways for nice coverage.
