My first grow! 150w HPS/Bagseed

Alright, well it's currently the 15th night of flowering, and I figure it's about time I get my grow diary going. I'll give you a little history first.

I started smoking around June 2005, so it's been a little over a year. I moved into my first apartment and started my second year of college this August. My girlfriend and I smoke when we can, but if we don't have any weed it's not a big deal. My goal is to just grow enough so that we can smoke when we feel like it and not have to worry about buying, or people being dry, or dealing with dealers.

After reading and learning for months, I finally got a nice little cabinet set up. I had some random bagseed, so I germinated 4 seeds. Once they showed their taproots, I threw them into some beer cups. I'm growing in a mix of 70% soilless potting mix and 30% perlite. Three of the seeds sprouted, and one of them fell over and never recovered from it's broken stem.

After about two weeks, I transplanted them into 6 quart (1.5 gallon) containers. From the time they were seeds they were under CFLs. I have six 15w 6500k CFLs and three 2700k CFLs. Two weeks after the transplant, I turned the lights off for 36 hours. I then changed them to 12/12 (Still using the CFLs.) After about a week of that, after they had both shown their female preflowers, I took out the CFL lighting rig and turned on the HPS. It's been 8 days since that, and everything is going well so far!

Now, here's a bunch of pictures to look at, progressing from the start.

From Left to Right: My cabinet closed, and then open, and then my germination device

From Left to Right: The seedlings of my two remaining plants, and my seedling lighting setup.

From Left to Right: Day 29 of veg, and then day 15 of 12/12, and the main bud on the left plant.

Feel free to comment, ask questions, give advice, anything! Thank you so much to everyone on these forums for inspiring me and showing that it's really not hard to grow!

Now I'm not looking to grab attention or bump my thread so soon, but I've just been re-reading some stuff about changing the light cycle for quicker yield. There's been a couple threads on this in these forums, with the most detailed one I could find here.

There are also a few very informative threads on the AN forums, here and here.

This is just bagseed, so I have no idea how long flowering takes. Let's say it takes 58 days. It's been 15 so far, if I employ the shorter days I could harvest in 32 days from now, cutting 11 days off. I'm very seriously considering it, and will think it over this evening.

I wouldn't do anything with the lights until you've confirmed some respectable sources and their results. I would rather be safe than sorry and if anything do it next time. Because I only grow so often it would not be worth the risk in crappy/no/hermie yield pot. Maybe if you set a few aside in an experimental room...

Thumb - 150w HPS, and I'm using the Cornucopia Plus line of nutes. So far it's looking good, I'm following the recommended feeding schedule. The NPK ratios seem a bit off from what is recommended, but so far I haven't seen any deficiencies. If I do, I'm prepared to fix it, and change my ways. There's a link to the nutes I'm using in my sig, take a look.

Fuzzy Lumpkins - There's a completely documented grow, I've read through all the information, seen all the disputing claims, and I feel that it's worth it. It's not like these are $100+ seeds, they're just random weed, I don't even remember if it was good. If nobody does anything different, how will anything new be learned? This could be the perfect way to decrease harvest times, but if nobody wants to try it out, who knows? I'm willing to risk it in order to find out for myself, and to help others see the outcome.

I plan on growing constantly, eventually turning it into a perpetual harvest. Once I harvest this round, I'll just dry them in the cabinet with the lights off, and once that's done I'll germ some more seeds. I'm not planning on yielding huge, just some personal smoke.

darrinjefferson - Yup, first timer! Thanks for the congrats, I loved watching your 400w cab get set up, I read just about all the responses to all your questions, that definitely added and changed my plans. When I do upgrade to a larger cabinet, I plan on adding a 175w HPS so I can get some mixed spectrum in there. I don't see any reason for me to ever need more than 325w combined.

green_grow - Glad to have you here, stick around to see how it plays out!

I'll probably just be doing bagseed, or clones of bagseed until I move to my next apartment, which is about... 9 months away. So I'll probably do two more grows in this cab, and then upgrade, maybe a bigger cabinet, and start working with some real genetics.

Edit: Guh... after making 14 settings, I see that that is the limit of the timer I just bought. I guess I'll return it and order one online, because this is the best one that was at the local Home Depot and Wal Mart. (I need to be able to make 18 on and off settings)

Looks like I'll have to order it online, this is the one I need. Looks like I won't start the new light schedule for about a week

Couple new pictures, this is the plant on the right in the last picture of the first post...

And finally, a close up of the plant on the left...

Nice little cab Bounty.

Makes me want to break out my old 250w stealth dresser again. I'd run it just to play around with some different strains if I could just cool the damn thing QUIETLY. I want it to be silent otherwise it isn't worth it to me. My 250w is in a homemade aircooled cylinder and was previously cooled by an "overkill" vortex 4" (same fan now cooling my t5 attic grow).

Tried inline duct booster fans, but they didn't work for squat.

How are you cooling that cab with the 150w hps in there?
