Stealth Question
I have a cabinet measuring 1.65’D x 3.83’W x 5.625’T in the bedroom of my small one bedroom apartment. I'd like to put a 250W HPS lamp in it and grow 4 plants just to keep my girlfriend and I self-sufficient and away from the drug market, but I'm wondering if the heat issue inside this cabinet requiring ventilation would be too loud to be concealable, because I wouldn't want my guests or landlord to hear and investigate it. What I'm wondering is, is it possible for me to make this really stealth, like no louder than a computer?
Thanks everyone, Chuckslam Last edited by ChuckSlam; 10-30-2006 at 11:12 AM.. |

True stealth, very hard but possible.
Quieter than a computer is definitely doable though. Computers can be very noisy

So what kind of ventilation system will I likely need for this? Should I have a blower put in to air-cool the lamp, and if I do, how would I go about reducing its sound output?

IMO, I would go with a smaller light. A 250 is going to be a bear to ventilate in a cab that size isn't it?

1.65’D x 3.83’W x 5.625’T
50 watts per square foot lights 1.63 x 3.83 = 6.24' x 50 watts = 312 watts You should get a 400 watt light Try to locate the ballast outside the enclosure to keep things cooler |

There will be much more to fit inside, like fans, ventilation system, reflector, and oh yeah....the plants.
But then again I tend to be more conservative. And had heat problems really bad at first. |

if that mean 1 an some chane foot deep and 3 and some change foot wide, and 5 and some change foot tall, a 400 is gunna be a bitch to vent.400 watts definetly an overkill for that space. i wouldnt recomend 400 unless it was atleast a 3foot wide x 2 foot deep space. bare minimun
id split the cab up into 2 chambers, 1 veg chamber and 1 flower chamber. check out the NGB mirco box for ideas. use a 150 hps for flowering its all you need, and it can easily be vented with a few pc fans. use simple CFL's for the veg chamber those emit very low heat Last edited by Trev; 10-28-2006 at 06:43 PM.. |

If I can convert a security light , anyone can. Trust me. Got mine at Lowes, it is a 150 hps security light, for $70. But I still use cfl's too. |

Check out my stealth cabinet: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=32035
It's a little smaller than yours and I'm running a 250. I'm ventilating with a 105 cfm centrifugal inline fan with a speed controller. It's louder than my computer and I have to run a little air filter thing in the background to mask the noise but it gets the job done and it's pretty stealth. Nobody would think it was anything other than a regular cabinet at a glance. I think it's unlikely anyone would be inspecting your furniture anyway. For the size space you've got I think you could probably move up to a 400 with better results. You'd need a stronger fan probably, depending on your ambient temperatures, but you could easily mask the noise with an air filter or fish tank etc. You could definitely do what you're wanting. Check the mills pride thread for some other ideas. |
