when to transplant from jiffy pots
ive got a few beans that have sprouted...some better than others...but my question is...
i can see the main root stem threwq the hole in the bottom of the jiffy pot. does this mean its time to move into a bigger pot? most of the sprouts came in the last 2 days...and none look fully out yet. one has only 1 leaf, and 2 have just popped out and havent opened totaly. just wanna know when to transplant so ill be ready thats the jiffy pots if it helps i can put some pics up |

Jiffy pots suck. You have to keep the seedling too moist to keep the jiffy moist to get the roots to go through the sides. Plastic pots are better. I would while they are little and yet big enough to handle with their first true leaves and not codyledons that appear first out the seed, peel the jiffy off the rootball and move the seedlings into another pot not necessarily larger with some good soilless mix potting soil. See my signature about making your own soil mix and other suggestions for buying storebought. You will want to have dolomite lime and gypsum in your soil mix to make your ferts complete since you have the orchid food with npk and micros. Keep lights close to the seedlings. At least 20 watts per square foot for veg florescent 1" away. You can use 24 hour light with florescents. Apply fertilizer weakly after their move/transplanting and they have their true leaves. 1/4 teaspoon gallon orchid food per gallon of water.
Good luck and have fun!

The problem with the jiffy is you need to keep it moist in order for the roots to want to go through it. If it is not moist enough, the roots behave like they are in a container. Trust me. I have made this mistake and peeled the jiffy off the rootball and got out of the situation.

im with sproutco. same with those expanding peat pellet things. some people seem to have success with them but seems like they cause more trouble than there worth. but like he said, just transplant them fairly soon but when you do, peel off the jiffy. and whats the NPK on that orchid food. better make sure its what ya want

Well...what did ya do?
What do you consider "good stuff" N-P-K- is N-P-K. Don't get all caught up in marketing, and pompous sales shit. I do not spend a lot of money on my soil or nutes, why should I? I'm just saying, you shouldn't have to save to buy nutes, maybe a light, but not nutes. |

what did i do..well so far i went and got some miricle grow soil for when i transplant later on...that way i wont kill the seedliongs..i also picked up a few more books (never can have too many). id like to get some rockwool cubes or somehting like that for starting seeds but its "winter season" here and ill have to wait till spring. at some point ill make a mother plant and do clones but i have no space right now. ill try to have pics of the seedlings up later...so far onlly 1 good one out of 6, buti have found 2 or 3 dead seeds. ive got two "injured" ones as well...one with only one leaf and the other is growing sideways, i tryed to prop it up so well see
![]() as for good stuff im talkign bat quano, liquid karma, fox farms....stuff that most people have found to be very good. im still new to this stuff. its funny, when i "wasnt trying to grow" and just threw the seeds in a cuz they grew fine but now im havin g a pain in the ass time to get them to grow this time...man i hate cold winters |
