Skunk #1 in a ghetto setup

Ok so today we are sitting around and decide we can make a small hydro system that will hold 1 plant only.
So we got to looking around and found everything to make a ghetto system and went to work.
Ill post a pic of it tomorrow sometime for you all to see.
We used a dual fish tank pump for the air lines but didnt use any airstones as everyone else uses.
We just hotglued the tubes right under where the bottom of the pot will be sitting.
We are using a small cup as a pot that we have drilled holes into for root growth.
We double coated the outside of the tub with duct tape to keep as much light out as possible.
I have thrown a Skunk #1 bean into a paper towel for this hydro setup and will be waiting for it to pop so i can throw it into this setup.
I have some liquid nutes that are 10-15-10 that i picked up from walmart but think they will be too harsh for my seedling.
As this is my first hydro attempt id love all the input from you in helping me along the way.
Please remember that im not putting anymore time into this project then needed for the plant.
This thread and grow will be a big learning experience for me and you i hope.

While airstones are not absolutely necessary, you should really use them. The finer the bubbles in the water as well as how far through your water they travel, (see next responce), then the more dissolved oxygen your pumps will give to the water. The more oxygen, the more forgiving your grow will be...less chance of nasty stuff growing in your rez, killing your roots and eating your nutes!

Seriously...there is no better cost/benefit ratio in a hydro setup than buying airstones. It's $2 that can save you a world of problems a month from now.

Not sure exactly what you mean. If you are saying that the airhose is barely under the water beneath the cup, I would suggest that you run it down the side of your rez so that it can bubble up through more water.

Imagine a bong. The 3 and 4 chamber ones hit real smooth, right? That's because the smoke is passing through more water, allowing more nasty stuff to be filtered out. With the air in your hydro setup, it works the same way. Instead, however, you aren't filtering out bad stuff from the air...you are "filtering" oxygen *into* the water.

Just because it is liquid, doesn't mean it is appropriate for hydro use. Soil fertilizers often work only in conjunction with the microbes living in healthy soil. In effect, the fertilizer feeds the microbes in the soil, which in turn feed the plant through their waste. These microbes are not present in most hydro setups.

I would recommend picking up some General Hydroponics 3 part. $10 a bottle (1 bottle of micro, plus 1 bottle of bloom will take care of 10 plants or so, I'd guess.)

Cheers.

Sorry to say but there is no hydro store within 100 miles of my home and my walmart doesnt carry them.

My air tubes are run down the sides but are glued in place to the bottom right under where the bottom of the pot will be sitting. They are under 5-6 inches of water.

Once again hydro nutes arent an option here plus i really dont have the cash to be spending on them right now.

Ill be taking some pics of it later tonight or maybe in the morning for you all to look at it.
Im thinking it will do better as a seedling or clone setup because the tub isnt but 7 inches deep aand around 15 inches long with 10 inches in width.
If that is the case then ill have to build something bigger for a full term grow but i will still test this system as a full term grow.
If it works yay if not then ill just chalk it up as a loss and move on.

Well im still waiting on one of these Skunk beans to pop so i can through it into a cube and test this hydro system out.

I cant figure out how people get beans to pop in 12 hours. I have to wait days maybe weeks for them to pop sometimes.

Ill put up a few shoots of this ghetto hydro system tonight when the wife returns with my digi.

Looks like it'll work to me, dude!

I have to comment though... You are so neat!! Man! Over the weekend I drilled, cut, slashed, hacked, and taped up like 5 buckets, and assembled a makeshift light assembly from four 42 watt CFLs. You shoulda seen the mess!! My s/o says I am banned from all future Special Projects, cause I destroy the entire house when I do 'em! LMfAO... She was just kidding, of course.

I look forward to your progress! G'Luck!

I love tearing things apart to make new things from whatever i salvage.
It must be a man thing

Im hoping it works but then again Skunk #1 is a sativa dom. plant.
I might have to trim some roots here and there to keep it under control.
Another thing im hoping for is that its a girl because id be pretty upset if it was a male !

Only time will tell what happens with it.
Right now its under a 65 watt compact flouro waiting for my soil bagseed to finish flowering.
So ill have to work with the lighting until i can clear out the upper part and get this bow under the 70 watt hps for the real growing to being.

Small update

We have lift off !!!
Yes this lonely skunk bean has popped its top and has shown its face to the world.

It seems to be doing pretty good in my little system.
I cant wait till it goes under the hps along with the 160 watts of flouro's. I think it will really take off then.

I think im going to use my Schultz Liquid ferts on it seeing as how theres no hydro shops near and i really dont have the money to buy any nutes for hydro.

I think i should be ok with the ferts i have seeing as its liquid and is only a 10-15-10 ratio.

Well heres the newest member to my grow closet.....

Small for now but soon it will be large and in charge im sure.

I was thinking of making a new lid for it and putting my other skunk seedling in there along with it but then it would definetly be too small for both plants to grow full term in so ill guess ill put it in some soil later tonight and do a soil vs hydro skunk #1 grow lol.

Well im off to gaze at my newest pics of my bagseed girl in flowering.

Hydro is so expensive with just nutes and lights and things you can't build. Good luck!!
Hope its female K+++
