Aluminum Foil / Mylar ?

Does anyone know if there is any real difference between using certified Mylar or Aluminum Foil? Im just talking about the stuff you buy at the grocery store. It sure seems reflective to me, what am I missing?

Mylar is much better at reflecting light than aluminum foil, if applied properly.

For just 2% (white paint 95%, mylar 97%, I think aluminum foil is in the 80's, but don't quote me on that) reduction in reflectivity, go with white paint. Much easier to apply, and much easier to clean than mylar.

That makes sense, i had a feeling it couldnt be great at maximizing reflectivity, because that would just be too easy right?

I'll see how my budgets goin and maybe use it as a temp placeholder.

Thanks

Survival blanets are cheaper then paint. For a pretty big blanket its like 3 dollars. Works pretty damn decent also.

yea, if you cant afford mylar, go with white paint. I've used aluminum foil before, very hard to work with, not very reflective...

You can get emergency blankets for less than $3 at Walmart in the camping section. It is easier to work with than mylar because it is just slightly thicker. Works great.

I used spray craft glue the first time, I dont recommend that its to messy.

missing nothing other than alumnim foil comes in strips... and maybe that would work for your space, but the blanket is also an excellent option... one more to consider... plastic white table covers, like at the dollar tree, they are light weight, real cheap and not a big deal to dispose of if ever need be... we have places where we use it and others that we use the mylar, so what ever you choose you are on the right track...

Good Luck!

I used an emergency blanket (again, under $3.00 in the sports section @ Wally-world-mart), and attached it to my growtubs with 2-sided carpet tape... seems to have worked well.

You definately want to cut the mylar to size before exposing the tape adhesive, I found it easiest to roll your pre-cut mylar into a roll, start in 1 corner, and slowly roll the mylar against the exposed tape, along the surfaces.

You can pull-off/re-apply if you mess-up, but it's not easy, and you may tear the mylar.
