cultiv8t0r's 1000w dwc scrog closet tent ~~ round #1: the rom bomb

Ladies and Gents,

It is with the upmost satisfaction that I report that all is finally underway. Setting up this grow, and shoehorning 1000 watts into a 2' x 6' x 6' tent presented a few difficulties, as my previous threads can attest. Tons of bungie cords and styrofoam insulation were needed to make everything cool for the neighbors.

The tent is a 3/4" pvc rectangle lined with panda plastic. Thanks to this thread by synthacide for the idea. Unfortunatly my version doesn't extend out of the closet as I need to be able to close her up and go into stealth mode.

Here's the cooling area with a 5000btu window ac ducted into the room with 4" dryer duct / rectangular flange taped to the intake (impromptu poly insulation to prevent condensation), and two squirrel cage blowers hanging on 7 bungie cords and 37 zip ties. The bigger blower (265 cfm) pulls through the light from a passive intake on the other side of the tent. The smaller blower, rated at 95 cfm, exhausts the room. Carbon filtering will attach here soon. (somewhere )

the light is a 1000 watt switchable with an air-cooled reflector that is, unfortunately, square. it still saturates the space though...100 watts/sq ft . Current bulb is is a full spectrum mh with the good red spectrum, but i'm still switching to hps for flower

the dwc containers are 28gal rubbermaid tubs with 3 4" pots per tub. I'm a CA patient legal for six plants. When my special lady or another buddy get a script, I will become their caregiver as well, and go up to 12 plants by just punching out the additional 3 slots per tub.

I'm hoping I can still fill a 5' x 2' scrog with these six plants! Is it feasable??

tub1

and the plants themselves, some nice Romulan cuts from the local dispensary. Figured I'd start out with a hardy, easy-to-grow strain. This guy's the best one...we have a couple strugglers with some droop and yellowing tops.

We started everything with Botanicare pureblend veg formula, 260ppm, pH 5.4.

Temps at plant level are 78 on the AC vent side, 74 on the far side. Ambient room temp is 84 though! (The AC blows right on the little guys.) humidity seems dialed in at 40%, hope it stays that way.

So away we go....our first dwc, first scrog, much to learn.

~ I think height is at a premium in my setup....with the light currently 24" from the tops of the clones, I have only an additional 18" of light movement possible....so I guess the plants have to be 18" at full flower?

~ My first big question is how high to install the screen As stated, I was planning on making the screen 5'x2' to match my light footprint.

~ Also - how best to get this to recirculate? I also want to add oxygenation of the water with some waterfall action. powerheads or reg. pumps?

~ Lastly, training, topping, fimming, etc...once we get some growth how should I proceed to get them as bushy as possible to make a consisent canopy?

So that's it for now... thank to everyone and sorry for all the questions...big shout to the Lorax and everyone on here for the assistance. Hopefully they start throwing some roots soon!

2 feet is a long way away. too far unless you have it there for temp reasons. you want it as close as possible w/o burning. sounds like you are fairly limited on height, but because you're scrogging this shouldnt be a huge issue - you have enough space to scrog. you can definitely fill the screen with that many - with any more it'd be more of a jungle during flo. when i use cool tubes, i have my girls literally touching the tube sometimes (which means about 3" away from bulb) and they get great light intensity, etc. some people claim the glass from the tubes lowers lumens, and it may technically, but ive never noticed a diff or seen a test done.

I have never scrogged as I prefer vertical light for its efficiency w/ lumens, but from what I understand you dont wanna top.. just train it along the screen, LST..

I plan on re-circing next round when i know how my strains all eat. however I use buckets. my plan is to have a rez topping off a control, which houses the pump, which pumps the water thru a dripper manifold, connected to the buckets with 1/4" tubing.. then the return line will be 3/4" tubing from the buckets back to the control.. its a little different for you, because you use tubs. I used tubs last indoor run a few months ago (small 400w run) and didnt like it - CANT go wrong with buckets. however, hopefully you can use the general theory/concept and apply it to your system..

2 bins and a rez right? maybe have rez top off 1 of the bins, hooked up to a float valve, and then have that bin pumping into the other bin, and have the 3/4" return line...

you're off to a very nice looking start.. your room is looking very clean.. used to have rom also, but my dumb ass let the cuts die, never got to flo it out. good luck.

Lorax, I don't believe freshly rooted clones of that size would be happy being any closer than 2ft away from a 1000 watter at this point...

Nice clean setup man. Best of luck.

I keep my freshly rooted cuts within a foot of my thouwie, and then within about 6 inches or as close as heat allows once they hit the rez. once the roots take and hit the rez they really explode and need as much light as they can get.

looking forward to new pics.

how are they doing cult? you ever switch to buckets, or decide to keep the bins?

oh yes...the tubs had to go!

controller is from a GH waterfarm system. it has a float value and a 18gal res that sits neatly on top ...but I have to move the ac vent before it'll fit. Doh.

Its got a 195gph water pump inside that's mean to connect to this feed manifold for recirculation (the buckets have 1/4" elbows attached to little sprayer nozzles (not pictured)

but I hooked the bugger up and it leaked like a bastard! near-disaster ensued.

leaks came from these lame $1.50 1/2" gate valves (they can't seem to take any pressurization...boo hydro store!)

and these 1/4" barbs leaked like little incontinent bitches as well:

So now I have some serious tweaking to do to get this feed line working dryly and nightmare-free. The little sprayers are awesome inside the buckets...gotta get 'em in there!

...

In more horticultural news, transplanting to 6" net pots (because I only had 6" bucket lid pots) was nervewracking....I had to feed all the roots thru the netting, and it looked painful.

Inevitably, some roots didn't get thru and have to re-grow thru the net, assuming they aren't fooked. damn.

Annnd....I finally understand how to calculate and mix proper nutes somewhat. As per this thread .

I think the lack of cal-mag and weak nutes (at 7ml/gal before) were part of teh problems.

So lets see how they do! Any input on this sodding feed line (and anything else) would be most welcome.

Cheers,

looking very nice, man. we have the same buckets and lids. my experience has been that you might want to put panda plastic around the sides and lids to help with heat, but I dont have my cool tubes yet, and you have a much more adequate cooling system than I do - so it may not be an issue for you, hopefully.

well the only advice I can give you is that you can try running the system without the recirc for 2 days, and in those 2 days apply silicone aquarium glue type stuff, costs ya like 3 bucks at home depot, get the clear kind not the white kind. that stuff works pretty well and if it is given time to sit it should help a lot.

looking good man, I predict that tent gets overgrown

well guys, I had to tear everything down today.

I had a spill bad enough to discolor my neighbor's ceiling, which brought the building manager to my door demanding access to my apartment.

I told him I'd have everything out today, and took it out I did.

He didn't much care that I was legal. Thanks anyway CA!

So we're going to be down for a couple months until I find a new space. Oh well. Setbacks. What can you do.

I definitely learned a lot setting this up, as short lived as it was. So that in itself was worthwhile.

Moral of the story is...don't be mishandling large amounts of water in an upstairs apartment!

Thanks all, see you soon.
