My First Stealth Closet Grow

I've been an avid smoker of the ganja for years, and have decided that its time that I learn to grow and take care of my own. The first order of business was research, which I spent about 3 full days doing after having a minor operation. I still feel like I know nothing about it.

Lets first show off my closet:

I live in an apartment and although I've never had anyone come in here, the building management can if there is ever an emergency, otherwise that have to give us proper warning of 2-3 days before coming in. Also if I have anyone over that I don't want to know (only 4 well trusted people know other than myself), they wont. This is all for personal consumption.

And now the setup(well the start of it):

I spent a couple days collecting everything I needed, probably a good 12 hours of shopping for all this random stuff, and I'd forget one or two things, and have to run back. The grow container is a laundry basket with the demensions of 18in diameter, and 24in tall. I wanted to make it as smell proof as possible and so I lined it with tarp.

As you can see there are 3 holes for the fans, well thats been reduced to 2 holes. I won't bore you with the whole process although I probably could, so here is my finished grow basket.

I've made the lights adjustable so that I can move then up and down, using $1.50 wood shelving slides from home depot. I also reconfigured how the lights were attached to the piece of wood multiple times. Having this shelving enables me to also attach computer fans to them and slide them up and down for air circulation, and a fake breeze.

I've got 2 80mm fans with I think 23.3 CFM. So 46.6 CFM for 160w total lighting. I may be upgrading those. They are connected to a box containing 2 TruAir Carbon Filters which adds to the suction of the exhaust. I may be changing the container with the TruAir Carbon Filters to something a little less noisy as well. I have 2 2in circular holes at the bottom for a passive intake connected to about 6in of tubing to block the light, and bring in cooler air from outside the closet. I've got the chamber lined with insulation(couldn't find mylar, and sport's authority was out of emergency blankets)While it keeps in the heat, its fireproof and reflective. Right now my chamber is running at about 9 degrees above room temp. High temp in the box is at about 85 right now, and the low is 80.

I'm planning on LST'ing my plant(s). Don't know what else really to say other than I'll be getting some nice clones of some good bagweed soon, although I have also considered just ordering seeds.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Also I'm definitely looking for recommendations. I also have some questions:

How many plants do you think I should use in there, 1 or 2?
How much heat will the plant add to the chamber?
and.... give me some recommendations if you have any!

Hey GS, pretty neat, "crafty" trash-can setup!

My answers to your questions:

1. I would definately say there is merely room for just one plant, I would discourage trying to squeeze in there more than one. There are plenty of reasons, such as: (a) more plants does not mean higher yield (b) they will compete for light and you'll be producing nice hemp rope instead of buds, etc.. Even so, you will probably have to grow some "midget" strain such as lowryder, unless you figure out some good training technique

2. The plant is not a source of heat, as far as I know.. a plant's "body" does not produce heat

3. Well, a small(70W or 150W) MH or or a a small HPS would definately give you more bud than 160W of CFL's, which would probably require better ventilation, but I think you're fine for a first-time grow.

The best of luck!

actually plants do give out heat. especially weed, i know this because this is a way that they detect grows from helicopters... they use infrared cameras and apparently the plant gives off way more heat than any of the others that surround it.

but that grow box kicks ass, i am thinking about making something similar only a little bigger. the only recommendation i can give is to surround it with soundproofing.. theres always a risk of someone hearing the sound of fans in a closet and then looking inside to investigate

Interesting... what I knew is that they use the infrared technique to detect indoor grows at night (heat from lamps) but never heard that it can be used on outdoor plants, and honestly, even if weed was warmer than other plants, I strongly doubt that the heat differential would be high enough to make cannabis plants stand out... and besides, aren't there other species of plants that are warmer too?, or is it just weed the only one? (how lucky of this poor plant species...)

I hope you don't mind me suspecting that your info is slightly altered due to hearsay...

yeah man there are diffrent trees that give off heat, like pine trees.and im pretty sure they do use infrared on outdoor grows as well.i had like 8 plant's in one spott, deep in the woods.I went to check on them about 4 weeks before i was gonna harvest them and they were all gone(stalks were gone so it definately wasnt a animal)and the only 1 that knew about them were me.
green.thats a nice setup dude,u got me thinking of building something similar for my clonez.

Sweet dude, can't wait to see what you can pull of with your setup

Not to be a party pooper by any means, but I just want to tell you so I can't say I didn't warn you...but you should really not let anyone else know unless they're living inside that apartment with you. And even then it is incredibly sketchy. I've seen a few threads in the past months that proves that point. People who put hours and hours of work into their grows only to be fucked over and robbed by their so called trusted friends.

But much kharma to you, let's hope that doesn't happen to you.

I think if you just do one plant you will yeild more then if u did two. Very nice setup, im interested to see how this works out. You will probably need more light tho during flowering. Or next grow just invest in a 70 watt hps. Any who, good luck man.

i didnt get the info from hearsay, it was from an article posted on overgrow about how they find guerilla grows in hawaii. and for some reason the plant does give off way more heat than the surrounding plants, i cant say if it gives off more than pine trees because i dont think they grow in hawaii. ill try to find the article to prove my point.. but i dont think the heat it gives off will effect your temps in any way, i just thought it was an interesting fact. anyways good look with your grow
