so after studying the speaker designs of members such as 0p0rAt0r, i've been workin on one of my own. i hope to find a speaker box that is about 30 inches tall, 12" wide, and 12" deep. i plan to have the speaker mesh suspended in a sense about an inch in front of the actuall box in order to create an air gap. I will be using a homemade 4-6" long cylindrical carbon filter with activated carbon. there will be two 80mm pc fans running at 6V pulling the air through this. i thought this would be quieter than a single 80mm fan at 12v and it would accomplish about the same thing.
As far as the lighting I will be running a 150w hps suspended vertically in a homemade cooltube aka bake-a-round which is 4 inches in diameter and 18 inches long. I will be using 4" diameter pvc pipe including t fittings and 90* elbows (represented by the pink). I have not decided where i should put the ballast yet. I really want to just put it on the back, but i don't want it to 1. be seen by anyone or even worse 2. start a fire if pushed against a wall by an unknowing person. There will be a single 80 mm fan running at either 6 or 9 volts, i haven't decided yet, to pull air through the cooltube. I included the light blue arrows to indicate projected airflow. Air will enter the box through the bottom and come up through the 2 T fittings which will dumb some of the air into the cooltube and the rest into the grow area. Do any of you forsee problems with not enough pressure allowing smell to backflow through these 2 4 inch diameter openings and leak into the room? I will be using a vertical SCRoG technique. I was going to wrap the screen all the way around the tube. However, I realized that would make checking on the budsites and traing next to impossible. Its already gonna be hard to get to the back (in reality the front side of the speaker) because the screen, when viewed from the top, will look like a U. I plan on having the door opening on the backside of the speaker and held in place by velcro. any locks would just draw attention. I plan on using 2 rectanguar containers, one along each side of the speaker. they will each be 10-12"H x12'Lx4"W. tgus should be just over 2 gallons each if i calculated it right using 7.something gallons per cubic foot. I will be growing in soil, at least until I have the money to get hydro equipment because i don't want to start goin hydro half-assed. I plan on starting a mother plant and cloning to soil from her. I'm not sure if I should just do one plant per container or if i should split them in half and do 2 plants per container for a total of 4 plants just to speed up the filling of the screen. On that note, the screen will be approximatedly 2 square feet. so I'm hoping for 2 ounces on my first grow and 3-3.5 on my following grows. I have not decided which nutes to use yet because I ahven't researched it on here and I don't really like to ask because I know the answer to the nutes question is all over the place. I'm probably just gonna go the chemical route cause its cheaper and then ill flush for 1 1/2 - 2 weeks at the end to clean up the taste. After harvest, assuming it goes well, I plan on either building a miniature odorless bud dryer (the on the OG faqs growguide faqs thats also sold on a certain site for a cough*barely any profit*cough of $299 . what a smokin deal that would be. i know i wrote way to much, but i couldn't really sleep so I just decided to get this down now. thanks for your advice anybody. |

first off, i would try my best to get the bulb mounted sideway's. because when they are mounted vertical the plant's are looking up at a thin part of the bulb the more of the bulb seen by the plant's the better, not to mention sideway's would use less height giving your more head room for plant's to get closer. if you were to get a mother before you started growing for bud you would be really helping yourself out. 1 foot by 1 foot floor space would give you enough room to put about 6 2 liter bottle's on your floor space. which mean's you could take 6 clone's veg them to a foot or so high and then flower. you would have the clone's harvested in about 10 week's total. i'd suggest single cola and more plant's. if you were to scrog it would take you 6 week's to fill the scrog screen up then an 8 week flower time. thats a long time to wait for every harvest. if you were to use clone's in a semi sog type like i suggested you could have them rooted by the time you harvest your other's which mean's you would already have new plant's to fill the cab again. so you would be yielding high and often. now for your fertiliser's. ive been using veg fert's called peter's 20-20-20 i bought a bag a couple year's ago for 5 dollar's and it's still mostly full. they also sell peter's bloom fert's. ive never used them but im sure they work just as good. by the way you can find these fert's at ANY ace hardware or walmart. they are very popular. good luck man.

so the SOG idea sounds kinda good. i definitely see what you mean on the harvest time being shorter and thats defintiely a huge consideration. would 2 liter bottles be big enough to SOG the plants?
SO i should explain part of the reasoning on using the 150w in a vertical position. I figured this way i could use my cool tube to keep the cab cooler. i also already have the 150w hps and im guessing if i just did a sog with the light horizontal maybe i should move down to a 70w so i didn't overheat the cab. let me know on that one cause i could be totally wrong. i looked around my local salavtion army for an old tower speaker without any luck :( i really want to use a speaker just because i don't want to build my own and i have to make this really stealth bc i'm gonna have a lot of ultra conservative straightedge ppll all through the area. |

i say you stick with the 150 if you can. you can mount a cool tube sideway's. infact ive never seen one mounted any other direction than horizontal. i think a 2 liter bottle would be a good sized container. you could veg the clone for a week or two depending on how fast they grow. but if you can find different container's better suited for your need's go for it. 2 liter was just an example. here's somthing along the line's of what im suggesting. this grower used a 70 watt hps. he didnt veg the clone long then flowered. but if you hada whole cabinet filled with small long cola clones you would obviously yield high.
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.p...992#post378992 notice how large his ak48 cola's are using only 70 watt's. 150watt would be fabulous. Last edited by sm0kateer4204; 09-19-2006 at 07:43 AM.. |

with the cooltube thing, i was just saying it wouldn't fit in sideways because its 18 inches long. ive read somewhere that i can find those hurricane tubes for lanterns/lamps at Michaels or something. lowes and walmart definitely don't carry them where i am though. thanks for the input.
I'm thinking it would definitely have to be cool tubed though bc theres no way i would be able to effectively vent the heat from a 150w hps in that small of a space.....or would i??? i would think it would burn the buds once they were flowering and ruin my yield. instead, i want the plants to be able to just grow around the tube if they get that tall. would northern lights be a good SOG strain? its the lowest odor strain ive read about (lowryder is too skunky for me, at least the last time i grew it out) and odor is going to be a big issue, that and fan noise are two of my bigger concerns. |

norhternlight's is perfect. good yeilder aswell as potent. i'd pick nl for an indoor over lowryder any day. you working with about 3 square feet. that's average 50 watt per square foot. you should be able to cool without a cool tube as long as you have reasonable exuast and intake. dont forget you need good temp's outside of your box aswell.

i might not have been clear about this in my design. it isn't 3 square feet, maybe close to 3 cubic feet, but the spaker wouldn't be larger thatn 12"x12" on the bottom and 30' tall. so its gonna be 150w p/sqf. im thinking just going flat with it might result in light poisoning or just my plants overheating and dying.

Hi,irishSoCo!I have a speaker that measures 24"tall,10'x13"scrog screen.i'm using 2 27 watt cfls with soda can reflector.it will be hard to find a speaker of those dimensions.most speakers that are 30" tall have a much smaller footprint than a square foot.I found a pair at goodwill that had a amp built in speaker box.Thats how I got a footprint of almost a square foot. You will find it hard to find a speaker with a square foot of space unless you find a much taller speaker than 30"s.Check out my gallery,I'm uploading as I type.(freakin dial up)This is my first gro and soon I'll be going with a 150 hps in a old wardrobe kinda like pipedreamers but a little smaller (24"x20").Best of luck my friend!

scrogdog: have u harvested yet from the speaker? if so im definitely interested in how u did, especially with the cfls. when i was growing with 3 27w cfls in a rubbermaid with a couple lowryders i didn't do that well, it was definitely less than an ounce overall. then again, it was my first grow, i was only using 2 liter bottles, and lowryder notoriously yields light. if the cfls had a good yield for u i may just go back to them because i already have them and free is better than something that costs money
