Blackberry -Who knew?
Grew some Blackberry(organic outdoors) last year from seeds another medical user gave us. It is a beautiful plant. The trichomes are so dark purple they look black. It was hard to tell when she was ready because of this. After curing it (we do a tea cure), it was not very potent as far as the narcotic effect but was pretty good for depression, anxiety, muscle and nerve spasms. It was really good for tea because of its leaf qualities. Flavor and effects were good. It was really nice for blending with the more hard hitting strains like Trainwreck that we use.
We started calling it "Easy Bake". I used it sucessfully to quit cigarettes. Because it is so gentle I just took a hit every time the cravings got real bad and it would be just enough to get me through but not to wipe me out. We shared it with some other medical users who shared it on too. Some were not impressed at all and wanted higher "potency". Some really liked it because of it's gentle qualities. Those who mixed tobacco with their cannabis found this to be a better substitute. There were children (with prescriptions of course) going thru cancer treatment and a couple recovering from catastrophic injuries who used it with good results too. It seems to be gentler for the fragile and elderly too. Also it's good for those who don't like being inebriated but need pain relief, or are using heavy pain drugs and use cannabis as an "attenuator" (for lack of a better word). Over a couple of months of curing, I noticed it was a little more potent, a beautifully subtle, red wine fragrance and flavor developed. We weren't using alot of it as we had other strains we thought worked better so it has been sitting in it's jars just doing it's thing. Well, just opened a jar about two weeks ago that has been curing 11 months now. I gave some to an elderly lady who has been using tiny amounts for her eyes and arthritis over the last year. About a week ago she called for me to come over and I found her significantly (but happily) "tits up". We have discovered it has become substantially more potent yet it is still very soothing for anxiety but leaves you motivated and quietly alert. We passed it on to others to try again and we are all just in love with this now. The quality of the effects are just wonderful; deeply resonating and incredibly long lasting. It is wonderful to use as a blend as it adds strength to medical qualities without adding to the inebriation. Also, the effects accumulate, and actually less is needed, only a couple of tokes or sips of tea during the day maintains a very stable and comforting effect. For people (me included) with depression and anxiety this is absolutely a godsend. For the emotions, it is like being laid down in a big old feather bed to rest. I believe; because I have experienced the sensations of low seritonin; this really has a significant positive effect on that. Whether it raises the level or inhibits uptake I can't say I very often have trouble with an odd after-effect when I use cannabis; a sort of weird feeling in my chest and it feels like my heart isn't beating right, with a pervasive anxious feeling. (It doesn't compare to the ickyness that I get from Valium and such tho, BTW) Blackberry does not do this to me even with significant use. If I get it from another strain, Blackberry relieves it right away consistently. That quality alone makes it really valuable to me as I hated waiting out the "yips" for a couple of hours. So, I thought it important to tell about this as I think this Blackberry has very important medical qualities that are missed when it is measured againt the standards of potency for recreational use. Now I gotta find more seeds. The two I was given were females. PS: Maybe important, maybe not, but these plants were 10 months old when harvested. I used "Rescue Remedy" flower essence throughout it's growth. Last edited by nan; 09-03-2006 at 08:00 AM.. |

Sounds good here, glad you can get some relief for what aills you and your friends.
If you don't mind 2 questions (what is a tea cure) and did you say 10Months old?: I don't think I ever heard of a strain takking that long. And please I am not doubting you I just never heard that before. Stay Safe And High. .Hydro. |

The short answer (LOL)
Grammie Nan's Patented Cannabis Tea Cure: BTW I posted the whole story on Compassion Corner in the Kitchen Table Forum "cannabis decoction/tisane" The reason you want to go to all this trouble is that you can make your tea with water without getting all the bad tasting aspects, the crystal structure is changed so it doesn't hurt your throat or gut, and it preserves maximum potency. Some people can't have the alcohol based tinctures or oil extractions, or don't like the brown oxidized preparations. This works as a gargle for mouth and throat injuries, sipping waters, and can be used to replace water in recipes (minestrone soup is a favorite) and other applications. The smoke is awesome, especially with vaporizer use-very smooth and fragrant with the strain qualities. Also, some people think this is a waste of good smoke and worry they are throwing away potency. You actually get more of the active ingredient this way as the burning of smoking destroys most of the active ingredient before you get it in your lungs. The exception is vaping of course. The potenty is spent after you brew the tea, but you can save and dry the material if you want to for poltices and such. We just keep a zip bag in the freezer to put it in and use it as a cold pack by putting the frozen material in cheese cloth. Just don't let your dog eat it. Tea with a little smoke of the same strain is what we call the "immersion experience", LOL #1. Organically grown outdoor plants in full sun. Don't ever remove the green fan leaves, let them yellow and drop of their own accord. Feed a little bit of diluted blackstrap molasses the last couple days before harvest if temps are over 60 degrees f. The day before harvest mist (not saturate) whole plant including back side of leaves with 6 parts distilled water, 1 part everclear early in the morning, allow to dry. It will be slightly wilted at the end of the day with beads of moisture surfacing. The cuticle of the leaf and flower structure is fully developed by the sun, organic nutrition and conditions. Cover the plants with row cover, (this allows light and air but no dirt) during the last weeks when they begin producing resins. #2.When you harvest the next morning , give one last check for cleanliness then cut off the roots. Treat stumps with Rescue Remedy immediately if you are going to reveg. The roots have good medical uses BTW and should be saved. Break into large branches and hang with the fan leaves ON and slow dry in a passively ventilated, dark, very clean, unpainted (interior), wooden structure. Sort of like how a tobacco chimney works; the wood balances the humidity allowing for a slow dry and mold inhibition, you can duplicate this in a closed room with heavy cotton canvas wall coverings or unpainted sheetrock and blocks of oasis slightly moistened with everclear (precautions!), and a small fan. Hang so you don't disturb them when you're walking around and so you can look them over good as they are drying. Handle as little as possible. Here, it takes a couple weeks sometimes for it to get dry to touch if the shed is full. Trim up and finish it in the paper bags, only allowing a single layer in the bags so you aren't stirring and knocking the trichomes off -Then into mason jars with a swab with everclear on one end(1 for a pint, 2 for a quart sized jar)-91% rubbing alcohol if you can't get everclear. Don't worry, the alcohol odor quickly dissapates when you want to use it. Make sure to vent the jars if needed for the first few days. Take care to not get too dry, but dry enough. #3. Wait until you get a slight fragrance resembling banana, that's your "ferment". If it smells bad, it is. At this point look it over very closely, take random samples to look at with a loupe or microscope to make sure it is immaculately clean with no fungus, mold, bugs, ect.- jar up with a fresh swab and process in a bain marie 180-200 degrees f to seal. Cool, check seals, tighten rings, store in cool dry area away from vibrations. Above all work in a clean room, with clean hands. Use food handling protocols. *BTW If you are processing trim that is in small pieces (we like it de stemmed and roughly ground up)with no stems you need a chimney: Roll a piece of clean brown paper in a tight tube that is an inch shorter than your jar and poke it down thru the middle of your material, then process as above. You can make up your tea bags and jar them with this process too. You need to do a "sweat' on your material for tea bags first. Leave jars to cure for at least 2 months before you use it. If you look at it thru a loupe or microscope, you will notice that the trichomes look sort of melted and flattened now. This is why it is now gentle on your tummy and throat. If you want to make hash you have to freeze it hard though. We know it keeps good for at least 3 years. Seems to only get better too. We just do all of our harvest this way anymore. I have learned to make up some of our harvest in 1/2 pint sizes too, extra work but convenient and you don't have to re-seal jars when you take a portion out. Re: 10 months The reason it was 10 months old had nothing to do with the requirements of Blackberry. I was growing some sativas which need that extra time as well as I was trying a method of starting my plants early so I could move my outdoor harvest to June. Blackberry was one that didn't follow orders and she blew up in to this fabulous, massive plant and was ready in October instead. It was worth it because the yield was over a pound. I mentioned it because our Trainwreck really got good when it got over 9 months old so I don't know if it applies to Blackberry but I thought I should tell about this in case it does. Some of the other sativas really get their legs when they are older too. Last edited by nan; 09-02-2006 at 10:13 PM.. |
