What is the best way to store seeds. I have alot of seeds and I dont want them to go bad

Basics:

Keep them dry

Keep them cool (don't subject them to a lot of temperature fluctuation, especially going above & below freezing repeatedly)


I store mine in glass vials with heavy rubber stoppers. I put dessicant inside of each vial and securely label it with seed info & date. These vials are then placed into a larger jar with more dessicant and then the jar is sealed and stored in the vegetable crisper in my fridge.

You can freeze them, but I don't recommend it if you have a self-defrosting freezer (a regular freezer should be fine). S-D freezers warm up periodically to above freezing in order to let the frost melt and then re-freeze; this is why food gets "freezer burned" so quickly in S-D units.

Get a silica gel dehumidifier, check ebay. You can probably get small silica gel packets from ebay too. Just type "silica gel" on ebays search and a whole list of dessicant products will show.

What does everyone recomend if you dont have a fridge to store seeds in? Some dark cool place? Also with rice Ive heard people dont use it cause their worried about something the rice carries and affecting the seeds whats up with that? Thanks

Try Hobby Lobby or Michaels Crafts; it's sold for drying flowers.

Some photography suppliers sell it to help store film & protect equipment.

Dry rice works; just be aware that it is possible for some fungus & bacteria to live in the rice that could damage your seeds. To help prevent problems, add a teaspoon of 3% H2O2 to the water you soak the seeds in.
