So this question is from my buddy, he is not on these forums but asked me to post so he can get some input:


ok this is my idea/plan and i want some feedback on it. my plan is to make oil, first i want to get all the kief off of the plant material with dry ice, second i want to use ever clear rather than butane
i am looking for thought and ideas on this. i would also be interested in making tetras and e-juice any and all info links tutorials are welcomed again my main point here is that i only want to use kief no flower

There is soo much to discuss about your post it's not even funny...

Let's get some of the basics out of the way... If you dry ice extract the material first you are going to end up with trichome heads only (depending on micron size of bag filter). This is otherwise known as bubble hash. Normally you would not make oil from bubble hash.

Assuming you start with raw plant material... Everclear is going to strip the chlorophyll out of the plant material. This makes your extract green/dark green/brown at best. Normally Everclear is used AFTER a butane extraction to winterize the oil. Meaning, Everclear is added to the oil and then the oil is placed in a deep freeze where the fats and waxes will collect together allowing for these unwanted fats and waxes to be easily removed from the oil. Butane is going to extract more THC and Terpines than Everclear alone will. Using Butane first on your plant material and then using Everclear to winterize and remove fats and waxes is one of the most traditional methods of making oil.

If you do an extraction on bubble hash - as you describe in your original post - is going to cause you problems. First off, Bubble Hash could clog up in the blasting tube if using an open tube to run butane through. Be careful of that... Not sure how you would go about using Everclear to extract bubble hash as I would imagine the bubble hash would immediately dissolve into the Everclear and you would be boiling off all the alcohol only to be left with basically the same thing you started with....

If you want to make top quality material then starting from something high grade like good kief is a pretty good starting point. Pressing that kief to rosin will get you some really flavorful full melt material. If the kief is pure enough and you want to use Everclear on it then you can extract it at room temperature if you want to. You'll probably need something better than a coffee filter to remove all the particulates.

Good advice. I have made plenty of extract with kief and alcohol. I use a 1L buchner funnel with 110mm glass pore plate and Whatman #1 filters:

Just to be safe, I use the following cold trap between my filter and pump. I also use this when bulk distilling ethanol from mantle. You do not have to get this model as there are lots of ways to effectively prevent liquid or gas etoh from entering pump.
