Looking for the flowering trigger

I figured a Lab is the best place to ask this.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The 12/12 cycle simply gives the grower a safe margin for flowering success. Flowering is actually triggered, more precisely, by a steady progression of diminishing daylight, and corresponding increasing darkness.

What exactly triggers flowering?

Or is the rabbit hole deeper than it looks.

Flowering in short-day plants such as Cannabis is controlled by light-reactive molecules called phytochomes.

Red light (660nm), which is abundant during the daylight hours, converts all the phytochome to a state which inhibits flowering (called P-fr).

In the dark, P-fr slowly reverts back to the original state (called P-r).

Flowering in short-day plants is triggered when the phytochromes exist in the P-r state for a critical period of time, and this usually needs to happen over a number of successive nights. Long nights allow this to happen, but if we disrupt the dark period with a flash of red or white light, all the phytochomes are reset back to P-fr and flowering will not occur.

Ah.... that's a great explanation. The light above my head just went out.

Many thanks.

many beginners don't understand that a un interrupted 12 hour dark period is just as essential to a good result as the 12 hours of quality light.

watch out for some of those new plug rails, that have hi powered red led chips to show if it's on or not, that can totally mess up the dark period.

i have a power bar in my tent that has a red and green short indicator. my first 2 grows i found a few stray seeds in the buds. upon further investigation it seems this little red light(which wasnt even directly shining on the plants, just the ambient light from the reflection of the mylar) had caused those buds to push out nanners. i fixed the problem by covering the light with duct tape and all my crops have been 100% seedless ever since. very small change that greatly effected finished quality.

In my observations,
Most cannabis plants build up enough P-fr to initiate flowering under a 14/10 day/night schedule.

To increase P-fr levels previous to lights out, you can decrease the blue portion & increase the DEEP red portion of light your lights spectrum. (If you have the capability to do so)
