How do I use filter stacks?

I'm in the process of upgrading to using filter stacks but not I'm not sure how they work. Can anyone help me with this?

Welcome to "blinding."

When a face filter stops a particle with a pore too small for it to make it through, the particle plugs that hole, and once enough holes are plugged, you have a membrane rather than a filter.

You can extend the life by putting a coarse filter on top and progressively finer filters underneath, but the best solution that I've found, is a sock filter, which I've never blinded.
