This may seem like a troll comment, but ive wanted to ask this question ever since this thread got started.
How fast can you realistically shoot off arrows in a life or death situation? Obviously not "legolas the elf in Lord of the rings"-fast (1per second at least), but im thinking with a lot of practice one every 2-3 secs? That includes drawing it from the quiver. I think archers in medieval armies would plant some arrows in the ground in front of them when theyre about to start combat, maybe makes for a quicker reload. Then again i dont think they had to aim so much...

Reason i ask is because i always figured daryl from the walking dead would be better off with a bow instead of a crossbow, for faster firing. Then again a xbow has the advantage of you can have it continually ready to fire instead of having to draw it back just before u release, may also be better for close quarters, inside homes etc.

I do not believe a compound bow to be worth a shit for self defense

Daryl should have been eaten by zombies a long time ago.

Talk about a light bow...
Prob not more than 30lbs at full draw.

I've seen vids of one guy that can get off, if I recall correctly, 9 shots percent second.

ha, I've decided what i want for Christmas

I need one of those speed shooting bows. Im going to the local archery shop and shoot some tomorrow. I know he has a few horse bows which would be ideal. Ill get a light one because Im only going to use it for the yard and that way the girls, even the righties, can shoot it. We can have family speed shootouts

Cool vid, spaventa. Should have searched on youtube before asking this question.
I guess if you're not aiming/sighting too much (like for headshots or a moving target) you can get pretty fast at shooting arrows. Also, if targets are pretty close, you probably dont have to do much aiming anyway.
Of course modern firearms are preferable for self defense; on the other hand, getting an arrow in a limb or torso has to be painful even if it doesnt hit anything important.
But in a post apocalyptic scenario, a bow would have the advantage of being relatively quiet (although guns can be silenced also) and have renewable/reusable ammo. Arrows that are undamaged after firing can be reused, and i guess theoretically it's possible to make ur own arrows. Or at least easier than trying to make your own bullets.

I think daryl killed as many zombies by stabbing them in the head with a crossbow bolt when they got close as he did actually shooting them with the crossbow.

Pretty sure if an enemy were shot by an arrow and lived it would be a bit more psychologically devestating to, not only the person that get shot but, his/her comrades as well.

Not to mention...
If war were still fought with knives & poles in close quarters combat, it's would get far less support.
