Preserving Concentrates... Glycerin vs Ethanol

I plan to do BHO winterized extracts. I've read that ethanol is a far better preservative than glycerin and if frozen, the extracts last for years. However, I prefer to minimize my alcohol intake... or at least avoid flavoring my edibles with it.

QUESTIONS: Will adding a small amount of ethanol to a glycerin extract preserve it nearly as well as straight ethanol? If so, what ratio works well? For edibles, is winterization even necessary?

As an aside, you can use your ethanol tincture in edibles, leaving zero alcohol intake. I'm the opposite, attempting to limit my glycerin intake.

Well, let's start with the reason you're medicating, and what cannabis you have for the purpose. Once this is known we can make more informed choices as to which preparations would be most effective.

Both are alcohols, and I'm not aware of one preserving cannabinoids better than the other.

This is to treat Parkinson's.

I've been buying many phenotypes but mostly those with very high CBD... usually a balance of CBD/THC. I'll probably need to find a mix of both types and will mix cured/decarbed with fresh/raw. Edibles with the decarbed can be baked but the raw will be made into no-cook fudge or mixed in cold drinks.

Ever thought about canna-caps? I add a bit of (certified) olive oil and then decarb. I take the cannabis I extracted the cannabinoids from and grind it to a fine powder. This is mixed with the decarbed oil and then packed in capsules. I start strong and keep adding powder until the pills *almost* get rid of all my symptoms. At about week 3, of 3 pills a day, the full effect is in place and my symptoms are gone, without over medicating.

It's important to use "certified" olive oil, since the non-olive oils being mixed with it these days are usually very wrong for digestion.

Douglas, I haven't given canna-caps much thought but I'll do some research. Can one add soy lecithin to those?

Douglas,

What kind of certifications are we looking for.

I use Non-GMO verified, imported from Italy, olive oil... bottled in Italy.

Also, does it matter whether Extra virgin, virgin, what grade?

Yes, you can add soy lecithin to them. When I use real olive oil, nobody complains about onset or duration with my caps.

Nearly any certification which will not allow mixing non-olive oils with it. Olive absorbs/digests quite quickly for anyone not allergic to it. As for grade, I've not noticed a difference between grades and effectiveness.
