I know of a feral cannabis population in Moravia, Check Republic, not all that far from Slovenia. The Moravian plants are descendents of Scythian drug cultivars planted by the Romans many centuries ago,
Hemp was cultivated in central Europe during prehistoric times, way before the Romans reached there !

I have some doubts about the supposed Turkish origin of southern Europe strains. First because hemp was used in Europe long before Turkish invasion. Second, in most gardens located in countries which have been under Turkish rule, it is not hemp which you find growing, but POPPIES ! This plant originates from Turkey and as matter of fact, Turkish armies spread it all around ! but for hemp ? hmmm, really not sure...

hey - Andrew Sherratt's work would give some important context for the whole mystery of European cannabis --- there is an old post by Rosy Cheeks which gives a nice synopsis of his work --- basically Sherratt was an Archaeologist specialising in prehistory, one of the biggest guys in the field --- his main fixation was the role of intoxicants in the development of societies --- "Consuming Habits" is one of his most easily available books --- I was lucky enough to hear him talk once --- I also met the guy he dosed with Fly Agaric who climbed the tree and refused to come down -- all this on on national TV etc.

I smoked some of that flithy Albanian ammonia weed in Italy --- friend used to grow the seeds out in Tuscanny --- they grew well in hardpacked soil, producing stronger bud than the alleged "Skunk" a friend gave him seeds of --- but once I found the Senegalese ganja sellers life was better

Tnx both for your input. Im waiting for Tripco to chime in as i know he is balcan strains colector.
As i know balcan strains are not connected to strains from Check republic or Moravia, because this parts were not connected until Austro Hungarian empire, but Turks were on Balcan for 500 years and im sure they leaved some sign in drug varieties of cannabis.
As i read somewhere there are two teories
1. this strains were brought with Turkish soldiers for hash making
2. drug sorts brought by turks were crossed with hemp existing here before turks

This strains are not the strongest, and with hermie traits, so it might work 2. theory.
But Bosnian weed is not the same as Albanian weed. Bosnian is more sativa and less hermies (like 5%), Albanian looks more indica with big % of hermies (up to 50%)

just my 2 cents

Aawwww, poor little plant !
Here some interesting data I've come across, can't afford to buy for now alas... Not much in the Balkans, but still pretty close and surely with some influence around !

Document title The long history of Cannabis and its cultivation by the Romans in central Italy, shown by pollen records from Lago Albano and Lago di Nemi = La longue histoire du cannabis et sa culture par les Romains en Italie centrale, d'après l'analyse pollinique des lacs Albano et Nemi

Abstract
The cores from the Albano and Nemi lakes, near Rome, were studied within the European Union funded PALICLAS project and provided high resolution records of the Late-glacial and Holocene. Pollen evidence of increasing human influence on vegetation was recorded in the Holocene parts of both diagrams, and the Cannabis (hemp) curve was one of the major signs. In this paper we present unambiguous pollen evidence from the Cannabaceae records for the cultivation of hemp in central Italy by the Romans. The oldest records of Cannabis and Humulus (hop) date from to the Late-glacial. Hop pollen values rise during the mid Holocene, while hemp pollen becomes more abundant from ca. 3000 cal B.P. onwards. The highest earliest hemp peak (21%) is dated to the 1st century A.D. This 'Cannabis phase', with the abrupt rise of hemp pollen soon after the rise of cultivated trees (Castanea, Juglans and Olea) is associated with the increase in cereals and ruderal plants. This unambiguous proof of cultivation by Romans around 2000 B.P. occurs as well as a long lasting pre-Roman presence of hemp in the area, which is natural and possibly also anthropogenic. Subsequent clear episodes of cultivation in the medieval period were found.
