Steam codistillation of extract
Here is an older video when I was actively pursuing purification via steam codistillation. Any two immiscible liquids will codistill over at the same time generally if they have enough voitility. THC is a volitile aromatic. THC is not a hydrocarbon as I use the term becaue it has more than just hydrogen and carbon atoms, however it is volitile. All the volitile hydrocarbons come across first mostly in this video folowed by the cannabinoic fraction. The alpha pinene is water white and comes across first followed by THC. This method is highly effective and pretty cheap to set up but there is of course a real danger when working with steam and hot oil. When steam gets trapped it gets explosive.
I have seen online suggestions that suggest a safety factor in this regard of limiting boiling flask size to no more than 250ml which is shown in this video. I likely will not return to this method because I have better suited methods now, but I wanted to pass on an earlier experiement that did in fact work fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vCKl-wwzpU |

The thumbnail on the video shows the extract collected in the dish. I want to point out that just above the large center bubble and centered on a smaller bubble is a darker brown spot. This is an analog to the "dark tails" that show up after the cannabinoid fraction in molecular distillation. This is an indication that I allowed the distillation to continue past my target compound. The thumbnail shows extract saturated in water. Vaping the brown portion is gross, and even the lighter stuff is not pleasant but this seems typical with every first fraction I collect either through this method, DCVC, or molecular disitllation.
