New England USA
We are planning on a vacation to the US. Spending about a week or so in Manhattan, and then to drive around New England and to see the Fall Foliage at the end of September, begining of October.
Can anyone please advise me of very special places to visit and the MUST see spots. Where to head for specifically? There is just so much info available on the net and I want to do and see and go to ALL. But obviously I need to be selective. I just need a direction. Thank you in advance Ronley |

Ronley my friend! There is a never-ending list of things to do from Manhattan, heading North.
From Manhattan, I would hit the city of Newport, RI.....then head north from there to the Berkshire's in Western Mass. After a day or so near Sturbridge, Ma, I would head north to the White Mts of New Hampshire. The Presidential Range Mts are there.....Mt.Washington, Adams, ect, ect...big beautiful Mts. From NH I would head north further to Acadia National Park in rural Maine. From there I would head to Stonington, Maine...a small lobster village way way up....but beautiful and rustic...nice drive. Good luck with your planning, and have a safe trip!

Hello,
You may want to visit Niagara Falls, and the New York state Finger Lakes area is very beautiful in the fall. There are a lot of small wineries along the lakes with beautiful views. |

anywhere in new england during the fall is a spectacular sight. Johnbudd mentioned some of my favorites, Newport RI (Mansions, the cliff walk, pretty blondes!) and the white mountains in NH are breathtaking in the fall. Id take the time to hike up one and smoke a joint at the top while you look down on the world. Also my favorite places for food are in Bostons north end...really good italian food in a fun atmosphere rich with culture and history.
If your into deep sea fishing i bet there will be some big striped bass around that time of year. You could catch a charter boat in marthas vinyard, cape cod, or any big coastal towns in Massachusetts. Maybe post some of your interests and we can be more specific about more spots to see. You need to take the ferry to Block Island, Rhode Island. It's about an hour and a half's travel from Newport. The Nature Conservancy has named Block Island "One of the Last Twelve Great Places in the Western Hemisphere". Lots of big striped bass and bluefin tuna swimming around, too! Avoid Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket; they're tourist-y and over-developed. Shoot me a PM if you want a tour

Provincetown on the Cape...what a rush! A must see.... P.town has all sorts of real interesting folk; from the old Portugese fishermen to gay pride advocates...Many artists...Head shops too!
If you are into nature, whale watching is tons of fun. Go up the tower there. It gives a good perspective and is quite beautiful. Nantucket and Marthas Vinyard islands are very cool too but, it's expensive and hoity-toity. Western Mass., or better yet Vermont or New Hampshire for foliage. There are a billion things to see in old N.England. I'm originally from Cape Cod and must say that I sorely miss N.E. at times, particularly during fall foliage. Have Fun!!!!! |
