Interesting question...from my basic understading, I think it may depend on mode of inheritance for the particular purple trait. We should expect equal percentage from each varietal. To mean that the IP should show purple frequency equally regardless of donor in the progeny (unless the donor also caries a purple gene). That said, only the island purps from what I see catalogued has been mated to 2 different donors in the Chimera line. Purple kush is mated to the Jack and to Cannacopias C99 (assuming same mom). The SS, Jack and C99 are not known purple lines but I don't know if a gene is hiding somewhere that would give a contribution to purpling. Not too familiar with the blockhead input so I can't say. While there are no purple strains crossed to the blockheads at the moment, there is a melodious funk x to the BH. The melody kush I ran purped big time with cooler temps and strong lighting but that cross was to the Jack. I think as time goes by and more people post we may get a better idea of how the purple lines interact with certain donors.

I was secretly hoping that a purple fiend had run both of the Island Purps crosses (SS & Jack) to provide that feedback. I haven't chased purple, but those offerings make me want to!
Didn't Clarke use purple as an example in Marijuana Botany? I think it was one of the dominant/recessive trait examples, but it doesn't seem so simple in real life. Interesting, though, that Jack did not seem to suppress purpling in the Melody Kush cross! Quote:

GSC s1
Quick update on the GSC s1. They are looking like any minute now they will step on the gas stretch a bit but they are still slow...which I expected. GSC#1 is the taller gal and she and has been the most robust since coming up. GSC#2 lagged a bit at the beginning but she also purpled early on when I had the lights right over her and closer to try and get her going. She did grow and after moving her to away from direct light she greened up...interesting. anyway here they are:

Purple Jack crosses
This is the group of purple crosses to the Jack. Of 9 planted seeds, 5 were gals and will continue on to flower. Couple of obvious differences have surfaced among the half sisters. The purple hybrid freebie (Phx) seems to be leggy and have been the tallest of three varietals. They have be topped to encourage filling in and to give the others time to catch up somewhat...although I don't think they have the same vigor. The leaves on the Phx are also longer and thinner suggesting possible equatorial heritage somewhere in the line. But who knows as the strain is a mystery. The purple kush (PK) seems to have slightly shorter and wider leaflets but that may be simply this particular set. The island purps (IP) seems to fall somewhere in the middle. As you can see from the pictures I left them way too long in the beer cups waiting to sex and they gobbled up most of the food in the container. They have all been up potted, fed heavily, and will be trained somewhat and allowed to fill in some more before I flip them.

I think the SS has imparted a pineapple/grapefruit nose to the island purps which is supposed to have more of a mushroom compost smell that settles into a more classic kush smell when dried. Longer cola's, better branching, I imagine? Hard to say as I've never seen/grown the Island purps but I think you may see more of her in the Jack cross?
I will let you know more when dried and smoked. |

GSC & IP flower time
These two gals were just put to flower a couple days ago. They were the two most mature from the group so in they went. I have a few more going in this week. Pictured is gsc2 and the lone IP. The purple hybrid freebie are really stretchy and lanky so I've been trying to pinch in efforts to get them bushy but they are resisting...I'll be cutting them back hard so they will most likely be the last to flower. The purple kush jacks are my favorite of the purple jack crosses at the moment...nicely wide leafed. Anyhow, here we go...
