Far from the only factor I'm anxiously awaiting results for.

Many of these are untested. If you've got any interest in creating your own extracts, these results may hold treasures.

I ordered an inexpensive water distiller,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/4L-Stainles...53.m2749.l2649

Simple to mod, put a standard plug on the fan cord so it can be plugged in separately (or get a second appliance cord,) and then simply plug the bottom section into a Variac, or other controller to vary the wattage. I've seen pictures of it disassembled, looks like it delivers full power to the heater until the overheat sensor trips ending the cycle, the reset is the power switch. I'll take it apart to check for sure when I get it.

I believe this list will be also serve as a good start to "variety specific" post-processing too. For ex. Maybe a profile with more alcohol substituted terps will be better preserved using different solvent(s) than something that is terpinolene, or myrcene, or limonene dominant...Im experimenting myself, and will share findings.

Very non-polar (see my list) with a very low boiling point,

"As a solvent:
MTBE is extensively used in industry as a safer alternative to diethyl ether (which is commonly used in academic research) as the tert-butyl group prevents MTBE from forming potentially explosive peroxides. It is also used as a solvent in academic research, although it is less commonly used than diethyl ether."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_tert-butyl_ether

I've been looking for MTBE since I've been examining the FDA USP <467> Residual Solvent list. They also carry MIBK, and many of the others I've already found here and there.

If the site still says under construction, call in your order. I just called to check on mine, and it didn't go through, even though the PayPal payment was made. Also the prices have gone up, though not by much.

I had to reorder over the phone, and while I was at it I ordered a four liter jug of MIBK. When these two arrive I will have completed the procurement stage of my research.

Do not order from the American Scientific (Oregon) site!! I had to have PayPal get my money back, the site is abandoned by American Scientific.

On the other hand they just hit my checking account for $275 for the 4L jugs of MTBE and MIBK I ordered over the phone with no email it'd shipped, I don't even know if I'll need to sign for it. No complaints, MTBE is unobtainium to the general public.

My 'water' distiller mods are coming along nicely, pics soon.

The density (specific gravity) of pure heptane is about 0.680 at 20C/68F, I saw 0.6815 @ 30C/86F, see the picture.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptane

As I've posted up previously in this thread, I have a number of these specific gravity hydrometers to cover the range of solvents I've acquired. Here's a table showing the densities of some common solvents, notice the specific gravity is unique to the solvent, locking in it's identity,

The Megahome water distiller he uses is available in a reduced wattage model for ethanol distillation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnjaBExt04g

I ordered an inexpensive water distiller,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/4L-Stainles...53.m2749.l2649

Simple to mod, put a standard plug on the fan cord so it can be plugged in separately, and then simply plug the bottom section into a Variac, or other controller to vary the wattage. I've seen pictures of it disassembled, looks like it delivers full power to the heater until the overheat sensor trips ending the cycle, the reset is the power switch. I'll take it apart to check for sure when I get it.

$65

I'm working on it..... A few pics in the mean time.

There are three power cutoffs with this model, the Megahome distiller has just the reset and a fuse.

In the overview pic you can see on the side of the can the 115C/239F Power reset temp cutout, in the middle is the 150C/302F over temp cutout, and the pic showing me holding a wire soldered to a ring terminal is the fail safe cutout (the solder melts letting the wire go free - it's not crimped.)

I'm eliminating much of it and adding a thermocouple, full details in a few days.

What I want everyone to see is the inside of the Power reset temp cutout. The fit of the reset shaft is sloppy, worse than I imagined, and the back side isn't a perfect seal either. It's being eliminated, I don't need it for my purposes, and it's a potential ignition source. Why I suggest examining any electrical device before repurposing it.

I doubt anyone has had a fire from recycling ethanol in these off the shelf, but if you have the know how, you can do better. I'm J-B Welding the over heat cutout directly to the middle of the can right now, hot rodding it so to speak.

The condenser is also getting a thermocouple temp sensor.

Same plan, power meter > Variac > distiller with temp readings.

Btw, I received some exact replacement seal/gaskets, two for ten bucks direct from China,

For those interested in an overview of essential oil extraction processes other than with heavy solvents, this beautiful handbook covers the field quickly and succinctly, nicely done.

The Essential Oil Maker's Handbook - Extracting, Distilling, & Enjoying Plant Essences

About the Authors:
Bettina Malle and Helge Schmickl graduated from the Vienna University of Technology in 1991 with masters of science in chemical engineering and received doctorates in technical sciences in 1993. They have published books and conduct workshops on the production of vinegar, distilled spirits, and essential oils, emphasizing the use of fruits and herbs right from the garden. Bettina and Helge have been married since 2002. That same year they moved to Klagenfurt, Carinthia (Austria), where they host their seminars and conduct research and developments in fermenting and distilling. They have two children.
