Tried a cover layer of de a while back and it created a crust layer. I switched to 2-3 inches of alfalfa straw, (no fines). It lasts a full grow, no gnats, worms like it, maintains soil surface moisture.

I used to use my old ebb and flow hydrotron
worked well
