Indoor newb, could use advice starting seedlings under 1000w
Hey all, in the past I've just jerry rigged setups with fluoros which I like but I have a 1000w HPS sittin' around that a friend said I could use. I also like the idea of having a nice big space in between the lights and the plants, since it's annoying as fuck to adjust all the fluoros twice just to water them.
I need to start around 200 seeds for a month before putting them outside so I'm thinking two 4x4 trays. The 1000w (sunlight supply harvest pro) is a square reflector. The set up will be open air in a room, temperature shouldn't be a problem but if it gets too hot in there I'll throw an AC in. I have a few Qs: 1) The seeds would be in 4" pots in a 4x8' arrangement, so are the plants outside of the the square footprint going to not grow fast enough or is 1000w going to throw enough light on the edges? 2) How far does the light need to be from seedlings? It would be very bad if I burned the whole lot. The thought scares me enough to just use fluorescents. Am I just paranoid? 3) Do I need a whole 15A circuit for the 120v light? 4) is there anything else I need to consider? |

1. imo 1000k is way over kill for seedlings
2. Same as 1 3. 80% of breaker is safe so basically, your 1000w HPS will draw a little over 9 Amps of the 12 you should be using. That leaves about 360 watts for you to play with. 4. Get a 4 foot t5 light setup.

So 2 folks say overkill, 1 says it is fine..
It is definitely more light than one needs but why is it overkill if it doesn't kill anything? Maybe I just need to pop some freebies and just test the setup myself. |

1k is way overkill. Get yourself some T8 shop light or some T5s and a metal kitchen shelf wrack to have at least two layers to veg and clone with. Your future self will thank you and why burn that extra unnecessary electricity.

Okkkkkkk. Lol i just wanted more space between plant and light. I guess 1000w is too expensive for babes.. Didnt really consider that part.
It has to be a temporary setup unfortunately. Landlord initally said nothing indoor but i talked her into a month for the babies. |
