Questions before first grow
First let me apologize for the long post and I appreciate you taking the time to read and possibly offer up help or suggestions!
This will be my very first grow, I've done some intense research the past 3 weeks and I do have the help of an experienced grower of 5+ years but I would like some more eyes on my build. My question is lighting. I went small to learn the ropes and have a 3x3x5 grow tent for veg/flower. I was gifted a LED 130 actual watt. Is it better to supplement this with 2x 150w HPS suns on either side? Can I get away with just 1 600w HPS and not have to go crazy on exhaust to get rid of the heat? The area has a dual sliding window and it can get ice chill when funneling the AC to the room. Has anyone grown with vegamatrix nutrients? How do they stack up? Having a better than average grow, doing everything right top to bottom, is it unrealistic to expect 16ish ounces from 5 plants? I'd like to get this grow and maybe a few more out of the way and do an 8 week perpetual. I'd get a 5x5 for the flowering. Can I get by with using the 3x3 as a veg tent or would I need bigger? Sticking with the 70w and 8500 lumen per sqft, would it be better to do 2x 1k watt HPS or 3 600w HPS?I've heard the 600 are more efficient and better lumen output in comparison to watts. Thank you! |

The more light the better (as long as temps etc are correct).
A 600w in that space will need some really good extraction to keep the temps downs, i run a slightly bigger tent with a 600w and 6 inch extraction fan and temps are always pushing 80f. 20 oz from a 600w is possibvle but i would be impressed if you get 16 from your first grow in that setup. I would also recomend learn to walk before you try to run. Do the first crop and then think about adding other lights etc. Its not hard to grow well but its also knowhere near as easy as people imagine. Last edited by Jaqen H'gar; 02-11-2017 at 09:49 AM.. |

Hi Bluf1sh,
I will second Jaqen on his advise. You can run 600w but you might get bit too hot I know people growing like that and managing the temp quite nice on the other I did have a problem with temp in the same setup. So I would go for 400w at the end it really ends up with possibilities you have (you mentioned AC). On the other topics 1000w x 600w well you heard it right 600 does have better lumen/w ratio and it is generally considered most efficient hps light. Friend of mine has ran two of those in slightly bigger setup than 5x5 and had tremendous results. The final thought of mine is don't rush it first hand experience works best for most people if you have experienced grower at hand it's even easier. You can count on support here on IC also. Have a good one. Lethal |

I run a 200w HPS in the same size tent and all I require are multiple fans to maintain temps. But I'm not growing huge weights. Jaqen and Lethal are spot on with exhausting a 600w. 400 is a good suggestion. Personally, when I started growing my personal stash I went from CFL's to LED, to HPS. I noticed a huge difference once I switched to HPS. I'd go to 400 if I could adequately exhaust it, but unable to. Good luck!
