Smart pot vs hempy. Newbie? Sorry
I have a few 5 gallon hempy vegging under 1000w hps.
Just learning how this all works. Recently transplanted from 50/50 coco perlite to all coco. My girls need watered daily and respond better to 2 times a day. 24 hours they are dryer than I believe is optimal. So I have been reading and shopping. I've found 15 gallon laundry totes that I believe would make great hempys. But I would like to hear some from you guys that have been at it for a bit. I am open to Smart pots, just don't have the spare electricity to run auto watering. Trying to grow trees to fill in a vertical 2000w scrog. I have 11 ft of headroom in my flower room. I would like to water once a day without my girls wanting more. But my current situation is not looking like 5g hempy will provide that. I have only 3 foot of vert growth ( trained like crazy) and as stated I am already seeing a need for more feeding than I can provide. So is there a downfall to making hempy out of 15 gallon totes? I need to stay within my states limits, and want to utilize the majority of my headroom. I have yet to flower these strains besides my hashplant Outdoors last year. Working with cinex and hashplant. I have been told by the grower I received the cinex cut from that it will grow another 3rd or more once flipped. So that leads me to shooting for 5 foot before flip. Just really wondering opinions on pot size and type. I've spent more than anticipated on this endeavor due in part to not planning ahead and lack of knowledge. I like the tote idea and am comfortable with the hempy system but don't want to cheat my girls if Smart pots would be a better fit |

You can always stick with Hempy but drill holes all around the bucket for the roots to breathe. Just keep the holes above the Rez hole. You get the best of both worlds, multi feed with a Rez! It's works great for me

Hempy over smart pot. I feel like smart pot retains nutrient salts whereas when you water a regular pot because of gravity the water pushes all salts through to the bottom. A lot people love the smart pots though, I just feel like the regular pots are cleaner and the pressure running from top to base of soil is a good thing that you don't get with smart pots.

Been using Smart pots and I love um. No Problems. At least none from the smart pots.
BUT of course everyone has their preferences. That is obvious to anyone reading the many differing opinions on any subject on ICM. Tribute to cannabis really, so many different methods work great. |

I think I'll end up tossing a few Smart pots in the mix next round and so some side by side

Picked me up a pump today for auto feed. My girls want more than I supply in 1 daily feeding

Earlmarne,
Hempy's, fabric pots or regular pots all work great. Some folks even put saucers under their pots which make them similar to a hempy. Personally, I've noticed I have to water more with smart pots and they are a pain to clean. I've ran smarties for years and just recently switched over to 7 gal plastic pots with a coco mix. Outdoors I still run smarties BTW. Indoors my ladies top out around 3-4 feet and it works for me. If you don't want to water daily go bigger with a 10+ gallon pot. If you want to automate with drip you can go smaller. Pros and cons to every style. Don't forget about dialing in your environment, many pieces to the puzzle. Cheers. |

Definitely SmartPots...
I ran Hempys for a while, but it doesn't hold a candle to coco in smart pots.
I consider automatic watering part of the success though. Coco works best when watered several times a day. Providing the roots are filling the pot well enough. To set up an irrigation system doesn't take too much power. A large mag drive pump is only 100W or about 0.1A. |
