Blackberry Jam
Babba and I have made blackberry jam for a bunch of years now, we have our routine down, from getting the buckets ready to cooking the jam....
First step is going to get the berries...we have a favourite spot that we go to every year and has always been very bountiful..its next to the river so it gets plenty of water... It was a beautiful morning, nice breeze blowing and the sun hadnt come over the ridge yet, prime conditions for pickin, heres a nice little bunch ready for picking We picked for a cpl of hours and filled a 5 gallon bucket pretty much to the top...this is on the way from one spot to the next one... Once you get home here are the supplies you need...sure-jell, the pectin and I get the light, you dont use as much sugar but still tastes great, lots of sugar, clean jars, lids and caps...you follow the direction on the package and start makin a mess! LOL ....its gets messy too!...stuff all over the counters and stove....but its so worth it...its an all day job but it enables you to have jam all year long.... here the stuff you need... Here it is cooking on the stove, thats babbas job ![]() here is is ready to be wiped clean and the lids put on... here the clean jars and the first batch cooling..you turn it upside down for 5 minutes after its filled...then turn back right side up.. once its cooled off you can put them on your shelf for eating on toast, ice cream, whatever you want...yummmm didnt count the jars but theres a few and we hope to do this again..there are still tons of berries out there to pick... hope you liked this and love ya all!!!

Finally, a JAM thread!!!
That jam is fantastic especially on icecream! The Babbas were wonderful enough to let me sample some last year. I had to act fast once it arrived cuz after the kids found it, it vanished! Great pics Babba.. thanks again!

Cool thread Mrs. Baba
![]() us men sometimes make jam also, sometimes... lol ![]() I like to add finely chopped/sliced/stewed apple to blackberry jam. Apple is natural source of pectin. the jam is usually runny-to-firm, pips included. we always encourage ppl to pick the balckberries/damsons/plums/apples from the garden to make jam or wine with,,, fruit picking is the best part of the year,,, this years damson pick is already aranged  in our old garden, as yout', we tended gooseberries, victoria plums, and green gages (I miss that tree)... the latter makes the most excellent jam. Strawberry jam remains my childhood favourite hands down,,, perhaps next year the strawberries we have growing now will be ready for jam ![]() peace to the jam makers... hehe thanks,,, v. nice thread ![]() DocLeaf

Blackberry and Apple Jam
today's harvest,,,
It's raining (at long last) the fruits should now swell,,, x2 varieties (white flowers and pink flowers) Here's the recipe we use 'as a guide' to make our Blackberry Jam: (edit photo attached) Blackberry and Apple Jam 1. Peel, core, slice 1/4 lbs apples (thinly). 2. Simmer apple with a little water until tender. 3. Add 1 - 2 lbs. (-1kg) Blackberries. 4. Boil for 5 mins. 5. Add 1-2 lbs (-1kg) sugar. 6. Boil and stir well for 25mins. This jam is cheap and cheerful,,, almost free if you enjoy scrumping Notes on woodcraft: When gathering wild foodstuffs ALWAYS leave at least 10% for Nature. Throw spoiled fruit back into bushes. Song birds, field mice, and moth caterillar all feed on jam fruits. (our blackbirds and thrushes like to fly in and take them on the beak,, whole)...lol Also if a wild spot is frequented by old people,,, go pick someplace that your younger legs will carry you  "Leave footprints,,, take memories" This way everyone reap 'nough food,,, jah bless ![]() love this thread,,, just found the "community" at last ![]() Im gonna have to make a batch of jam now (edit: just made jam... lol) peace dL
