great idea on the composite material as i was planning on using 3/4 birch ply with a urethane coating but that would still leave lots of places for bacteria and crap to hide
the fan is a 4 speed dayton 9 amp that will push 1600 + cfm thru 1" static pressure that the hepa is spec'd at so it should be good to go

planning on playing with reishi and turkey tails to start even though the turkey tails grow all over here (puget sound) naturally and maybe grow some edible ones down the road

back in the 70's i played with psilocyb's in quart jars but mostly ended up growing mold so this time around i actually read stamets books and invested in some sanitation

btw ronbo51, the first hand knowledge is appreciated

Develop your sterile technique and try to be methodical when you work under the hood. Be freshly showered, fresh clothing, clean hands. Wear gloves always. Any lab glassware can be substituted with canning jars. Try to touch things the fewest possible times. Have an iso alcohol spray bottle handy.I went through a large pickup truck load of sawdust a week through my sterilizers and hood. Not to mention all the 50 pound bags of rye that became bags of spawn. Never had much trouble.

I have two pre-inoculated bags of shiitake and reishi that came in today

My basement is around 60 and I am going to turn a shelf into a humidity chamber with some tape/clear plastic. I'll find some racks to keep the blocks lifted and I have a couple 40w leds that should be plenty.

my question is do I leave the light on 24/7 or 12/12? I'll snap I pic of the bags when I get back from work tonight.

Awesome thread Waxi,

Ive had a similar idea about growing Gourmet Mushies for the local Farmers Market here, I have never seen any of the vendors offer any type of fungus where I am.

I do have some previous experience growing a few different species of fungus.
Multi-spore technique, live tissue culturing and inoculations, preparation of multiple types of substrates and clean practice techniques.
When I was growing mushies I used a small glove box to do most of my clean work, which works great and are cheap to build. For a fruiting chamber I used those mini greenhouses you can buy at Homedepot. I hooked a cool-mist humidifier up to a "dry box" and used 3/4" tubing to run it into each of the greenhouse. You can fit about 5 substrate bags on each shelves with about 5 shelves total, so 25 bags per greenhouse.with this set-up you can crank out a lot of Shiitakes

Home-Laboratory cultivation of Morchellas isn't really feasible with the current techs available, as the Flushes are just too sporadic. Not saying it cant be done, just they are one of the trickiest to fruit.
Best best is to pick some fresh Morels and use them to make a Live-tissue slurry and use that slurry to inoculate the roots of suitable trees, elm pine, ash ect..

Anyways Subbed to the Thread and best of luck with your new venture in life!

thanks for stopping in Ash,

very cool diy way to grow shiitakes. I am a bit confused about the dry box setup though,

I also like your idea about making a live-tissue slurry...

myco slurpees lol

If you got any old pics of the setup, feel free to share.

I know, pics or it didnt happen, haha. Sadly, I dont have any pics, when I was growing the Shrooms it was before smart phones.

A 'Dry Box' is used to prevent too much condensation from building up inside of the mini greenhouses and on the substrate when using a cool mist humidifier to get the RH up to fruiting conditions.

The big 18gal(I think they are 18 gal?)Rubbermaid tote containers work great for this, basically you run the tubing from the humidifier into the Rubbermaid tote, then anther piece of tubing going from the tote to the the mini greenhouse.
I found when I didn't use a Dry Box I would get condensation on the mycelium in the substrate bags and that would cause the bags or trays to stall out and not fruit in those spots.
I supposed now a days you can get some pretty fancy digital humidifiers that would give you better control over the output and the Dry Box might not be necessary though.

I hope that explanation makes sense ,lol

I plan on getting back into growing the fungi soon, as I really miss the smell of malt extract and agar

makes sense now, let us know when you do! I've been way too lazy about this and push myself everyday to learn new stuff.

I messed up 3 bags so far -_- I have one turkey tail on the way but want to try growing them from scratch. I either gotta order the spores or find them myself(which I dont think is even possible now)

Waiting to move so I can construct a small lab and learn the ropes...hows your lab coming along superglue?
