How do you ventilate a hoophouse in cold weather?

I've never grown in a greenhouse, or indoor, or in winter but I'd like to try so I'm setting up a small hoophouse (10x16 or so) with one 1000w somewhere in there on an 8x8 test area for heat and to see the difference in yield/quality. I'm in N cal foothills. If I can get the greenhouse set up by mid-Nov, I'll veg for a month and finish in mid Feb.

My question is, for a winter hoop, I'll be keeping the plastic on all the time, so how do I keep it warm while avoiding high humidity and creating enough airflow? Do I just need lots of airflow and lots of heating to compensate for the fresh cold air? Can I just leave the bottom open, or vent it at the top?

Any other advice would be appreciated. Like ideal pot size, type of heating, etc. Was also thinking of double layering the hoop plastic.

I have a 18x20+ green house that i plan to run through winter if possable. I have a humidity/temp gage from wall mart . funny thing i noticed is i get my highes humidity in the middle of the night 65% to 80% . i use a passive intake 20'×6" along the one side of green house with a open vent on one side right at the top that is 2'×2' it creats a nice natural air flow but i still get peaks of high humity when temperature is at it lowest . so i plan to run a small 900 watt heater for the 4 hour high humity time period and see if it will restore the natural ventingand bring temps to a acceptable range at night. I will let you know how it works out . atleast i wont be the only one trying to run a all season green house .

Dankwolf, keep me updated. Thanks.

Jay, i have the 70 pint version. So I guess I'll need to throw that in there. It generates a little heat so I'll still need a heater. Not sure if passive ventilation is enough either.

Who dat, let me know if you figure anything out.

Build a rocket mass heater and vent with fans when the humidity gets to high or it gets to warm.

Easy to build and cheap to use.

I considered this but I was under the impression you have to feed it every few hours.......not fun getting up in the middle of the night. That's why my wood stove is for fun use only

It is better to feed it once a day. Let the thermal mass do the work. If you have enough thermal mass you shouldn't have to have more than two fires in 24 hours.

Spent a few minutes on a permaculture site looking at rocket mass heaters, was an education.
