Although there are downsides in hemp farming also, especially if grown for paper pulp or gasoline...well, atleast compared to some other biomaterials. Perennial willow (Salix) and eucalyptus tree are good alternatives to annual crops like hemp, because there are less need for inputs like fertilizers, agricultural deeds with machines...and that means less load for the environment!

But of course hemp fibre is important for specialty paper producers like smoking paper and condensator paper industries...

Hemp is also problematic when grown for gasoline because those crops could have been grown for high quality hemp protein food. There are better alternatives. Although there is an interesting application where hemp biodiesel is produced in a laboratory from a hemp seedcake with a help from a Himalayan yeast extract...
