Truffles are a fungus, which is much more closely related to an animal than a plant. Fungus & animals share common evolutionary history and many biological and chemical traits which are not found in the plant community.

I fail to see why cannabis should be meant for a different treatment than any other crop held by big company.
Everybody in the world is eating exactly the same banana Cavendish, does it mean that customers wanted specifically to have Cavendish? Of course it doesn't. Are Delmonte's gigantic pineapple fields giving better pineapples than the ones you find in villages? No again. Is it by popular demand that all intensively grown corn is the same F1 anywhere you go? Did the public ask for gamma irradiated cabbage? I could keep on forever doing this.
Nothing easier for a big firm than making the public put up with low quality products, you just need to wait one generation et voila! Plenty of new customers who have never known anything else.
