Damn, good point about Ed's book being inaccurate, that might be the cause of all this confusion. I still think there are two versions though, especially when looking at the photo oldbean posted with the two different figures for the grms/m2. Does Mandala Mike come on here anymore? It would be nice to clear this up

Hi Robney the strain was definetly refined to 3 phenotypes for the newer packs with a higher yeild I think the indica phenos were deselected from the line

I believe it may be a constant project where she is refreshed each season but only Jasmine or Mike can answer that for us.

Its a top shelf smoke, that's for sure

Hi oldbean, you seem to know a bit about Satori....I am getting ready to soak a few.....labeled 2012. Are there more than 3 phenos to look for back then? Any insight as far as f/m ratio as I only have one pack....and a 3x3 tent to flower them in so need 4 nice females ..probably will do all seeds and pick the best.

Thanks in advance

If you look on the mandala website the pictures show the 3 phenotypes. I've not germinated a pack newer than 2011 season so can't really comment if there are more phenos to find and I've always had a high female ratio. I've found more phenos in the older packs.

Like if I germ 3 beans I get 3females as I use a different pack each time its probably best to find 1 female and clone her then its an easier garden to manage

Are you doing a diary, wouldn't mind subbing to that

Peace

ooo thanks for the link to that post oldbean! Did a little more research with the archive.web.org site and found that if you look at old versions of the Mandala website they say that in 2006 they released a new version of Satori. So I guess pre-2006 is different than the rest. Though I think the indica phenos are still in there as I'd say mine falls into a more indica category than sativa (little stretch and dense buds), and I purchased them last year so no way they are pre-2006. Here's a photo:

I second the diary unregistered! Would love to see some other satori to see if I should pop anymore beans (I'm pretty happy with my pheno, but if better phenos are out there I'd like to see it).

Satori

Grew Satori for awhile and found some huge frosty keepers. This is the only pic I have left, shows the indica side of her. The Mandala #1 was tastier and all around a better plant imo. This was around 2008 with the #1 so I don't know now. I found something frosty and huge in every pack of Satori I popped. The piney smelling girls always seemed larfy and tasted like shyt imo. Have fun!

great thread.

Nepalese sativa/unknown indica reworked over the years with undisclosed genetics is my best guess.

Satori

HIGH TIMES "Strain of the Year" 2007

Type:

sativa-indica

Genetics:

Nepal
Quote:
To achieve this unique combination we selected a very rare plant which was discovered in our personal collection of Nepali landrace genetics. This extremely potent and cerebral female formed the basis for further breeding

Quote:
This innovative Sativa strain was introduced to the market in 2005 by Mandala Seeds. Satori cannabis is unusual because it has a shorter flowering time than most Sativa strains, it’s easier to grow and it can be grown outdoors in northern Europe. It’s was created by crossbreeding native Nepalese strains.

here's some enlightening info from Mandala's faq page:

Quote:
Are your strains pure landrace genetics?

All our strains contain a certain percentage of landrace genetics or are hybrids of mixed landrace stock

"it's a nepalese sativa crossed into an undisclosed indica.

Contains landrace genetics from:

Nepal
Quote:
The challenge was to retain the unique psychoactive sativa effect in a pure form while infusing the strain with the growth and flowering pattern of a high yielding indica.
https://mandalaseeds.com/

by this description one could assume that a nepalese indica was crossed into a nepalese sativa. another member asked this same question in '09 and never got a response.

What is in Satori?
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=112423

satori is not a landrace. it may or may not be a poly-nepalese hybrid (one sat. nepalese strain crossed into another indica nepalese strain)."
