Big Bud, B-52 grow 1000hps (frosty buds pg 3)
So here is my first real grow, I've done an "aquaintence" grow with bagseed and fluros that turned hermie on me so no results from that except for the experience.
My new setup is a 1000 watt hps (with enhanced blue spectrum) in a sun systems vented hood, carbon scrubber (homemade), and 465cfm dayton blower. Seeds are Nirvana Big Bud and B-52. Pictures: 1. Safety first! 2-3. 1000watt hps blub, remote ballast, hood. Enhanced blue spectrum. 4. Using miracle grow potting soil, with blood and bone meal, 30% perilite, 5 gal pots, waterings are filtered h20 with hydrogen peroxide. I've already seen some Mg defeciencies in some of the plants and that's been treated. 5. 465cfm dayton blower with homemade carbon scrubber. This isn't filled yet, I'll be adding 4.0mm activated pellitized carbon in a few days. The scrubber was made from an old (i.e. free) john deere tractor air filter. Lined the sides with batting and cheese cloth. I'll post more pics of it being filled when I have my carbon. 6. Vented hood in action. I don't have the duct attachments yet, so I'm make doing with loads of duct tape. I don't see a fire hazard here, the blower is on 24/7 and everything can be touched without burning myself, including the tempered glass right under the light. 7. Fan to circulate air, and the remote ballast is raised off the carpet by a pan (would like to get a concrete block. The exhaust is vented out of the room, back inside living quarters. It is actually right beside the dryer and once I'm sure the scrubber is doing its job I'm going to reroute it out the dryer exhaust to the outside. 8. Shot of the grow room, hood is hanging by chains (I'll have the blower/scrubber hanging as well when it's complete to reduce some vibrations that are currently appearing). I see the possibility of a light rail at somepoint here =). Blue buckets are Big Bud, white ones are B-52 (I didn't plan it that way, they ran out of the same coloured buckets! Anyone think I should cover the white ones with tin foil to prevent light into the root ball? 9-10. Both are B-52, there's a bit of variation among these f2s. 11. This is one of the big bud plants, damn are those leaves fat! The others are showing amore even mixed between indica/sativa. Click for Larger Image Click for Larger Image Click for Larger Image Click for Larger Image Click for Larger Image I'll be sure to keep updating and posting pics as things progress. Everything was germed at the same time (paper towel method) and it is almost to week three right now. They were kept under fluro tubes (cool white) to sprout and strengthen until I got the hps up and running. They were in 8 oz cups and had excellent root development when I transplanted, no soil came loose and roots were well-wrapped around the bottom. So that is what's going on, I'm all up (and excited) to hear what anyone has to say about the grow. Happy growing and smoking. Last edited by Anhedonia; 08-10-2004 at 03:55 AM.. |

For your first real grow your in damn good shape. You have all the ingrediants there for success that is for sure, don't get frustrated if it still doesn't take a little time to fine tune you setup. I know it took my a little crawlin time before I started to really run.
Your looking excellent so far Good growing Tex |

Texas Kid; yeah, it will definately need some fine tuning as the time passes, need a good intake as the temps are a little higher than what I would like but they aren't detrimental. And there are some light leaks that will need to be patched before 12/12. It was such a bitch to cover the window, 6-8 layers of duct tape on all the seams to keep the light out. I love reading your threads btw, thanks for coming by.

so far so good.......
I agree with texas kid, you definetly did your homework. Big jump from hermies and floros!! I think you will enjoy the
1000 watter!! You need some kind of intake. Can you install a window A/C? You would only need a 5000btu, maybe a 10,000btu. Another great investment would be a portable A/C. They run about $300 for a 7500btu and about $400 for a 9000btu. My buddy just bought the 9000btu one and was able to bring the temp down by 5-10 degrees. The nice thing about the portable a/c is you can use it any where!! Other then that you have got it lookin great!! Let me know if you have any questions. I am strictly hydro, but we are all growing the same thing! Later |

Hooked-on-Grown; thanks for dropping in, i've been looking at your grows as well.
I felt like I butchered the first plants I grew. I accidently got bleach into the soil by reusing some old perilite and the pH got compltely fucked. I expected them all to die but I repotted (flushing didn't work) and they bounced back, only to become hermie in a month. I know what to look for in the plants now at least The portable a/c unit sounds like a great idea, especially the one under $100 that Texas Kid mentioned. I'm going to try to close off some vents in my place first and see if I can get more cool air coming into the growroom from the central a/c. Although I really like the organic soil grows, I'm thinking about hydro in the future. This used a lot of dirt and I'm probably going to try to recycle the dirt for the next couple grows as getting rid of it will be a hassle for the area that I live in. I definately did some homework, devoured the growFAQs on OG, love reading all the grow threads there and here. I've lurked on OG for a while but I've never posted there. I decided that I wanted to be a part of this community, don't think I'll regret it a bit. cheers |

The a/c tex is talking about is a window unit, going in the window of course!!!! The portable one is just that, it's portable. Just clarifing! My buddy grows in a back bedroom and utilizes the central a/c as well. You can probably add a 5000btu window unit and drop the temp by 5 degrees or so. It would not add that much more to your electric bill, especially if you got one with power saver where it turns off when the desired temp is reached. It comes back on when it rises above the temp set.
Hope this helps Later |
