Sherry - Custom SWC Bio-Bucket SOG

howdy folks... here i'll showcase a new toy i made. i've run 5gal bio buckets in the past, and recently tried out swc to see how root space did n such... the culmination of all that, really from readin bigtoke's work some years ago, resulted in a brain fart as i thought of a way to make a bed. i was going to do soil... but this option turned out to be about the same price, total system cost around $200. because of the great success of this one, i'm making another one, and will throw together a detailed DIY for the system, as it is able to be thrown together with parts from local stores :)

in the system is Sherry, my hawaiian sativa Kona Cherry x Skunk #1 feminized cross. all plants put in the system started on 12/12 and all female at about 2-3wks into flower now. i'm still lovin my feminized success ;) usin BC nutes right now, with sm-90 and hygrozyme to battle high temps during this heat wave while i work on gettin temps down. makes it more recirc swc than bio because i ditched the hydroguard approach with the heat wave. it measures 4'x6' with all 8 tubs, but i slacked on fillin up the final bucket so it's more like 7 now, under a 1000hps on a light mover. a perfect 4'x4.5' square with 6 tubs for a non-moving light. btw i put 9 sites per tub.

question for BigToke if ya see this man... i did put 2x 12" airstones and pumps for each bucket as i wasn't sure about the swc an sufficient oxygen levels... what's your opinion on this? should they be fine sans airstones as long as water circulation is still 7x per hour an the waterfalls in the res are sufficient? (8x 6" fall or so) this would cut system cost substantially if i could remove them from the design, as well as make it pretty silent again, but i was all better safe than sorry yknow... your opinion on this would be highly valued ;)

so without further adieu...

there is the distributor i made for the system connected to the 1000gph pump. distributors are a must, as i refuse to put my pump in the res an heat up the water, no matter how convenient it makes runnin the water inputs ;) putting them at the bottom of the tub was a dumb mistake though, as the water then drains back n overflows if turned off, but hey, this is bio baby! 24/7! hehe see yas all later when i have more to report back on or a DIY.

peace n green thumbs all :joint:

Nice setup, I've been trying to find good info on SWC just to get a grasp on how it all works. Just hearing how much of your water gets drank up by the plants in DWC made me think SWC could be a pain in the ass without a rez. Nimby's SWC in his stealth micro box made me ponder on how often he had to refill it by hand. I'm leaning towards DWC in a big rubbermaid tub with a scroggin screen built onto the lid out of pvc and chicken wire (pretty much a larger dwc version of nimby's swc setup). Would like to learn more about SWC though. Looking forward to this thread : ) Keep us posted

howdy Oysta! stay tuned :)

bubbleboi: dwc scrog would be nice. swc hand watered, is not the best combo ;) the plants drink quickly. i opted for swc here, because with my fem seeds i was ready to do high density sog, and with minimal veg, swc is perfectly fine for root space. connected to the 40gal res, an this system is on autopilot. as it is now, they're drinking about... 3 gallons a day? that's just a rough guess, buckets have 7 gals of water in em with 9 plants each. they're gonna be drinkin ALOT in full bloom... gonna be crazy.

sneak peak at what's to come of Sherry...

Thanks for the opinions, probably start with DWC and go from there in future grows, I've only done ebb and flow in the past and the SWC setups I've thought up would be along the same lines, except not completely draining, air stones, and flooding for recirc. Wanna try out different setups just to see which ones suit my needs and satisfy my personal likings the best. My ebb setup was simple, just a shallow rubbermaid container for the pots placed inside/on top a deeper one which served as the rez, pvc pipe for overflow, holes in the bottom of the top container. Just flooded the top with a fountain pump and it worked great. Not to mention the entire setup was under 50 bucks (was only 3 plants though). Can't wait to see how your SWC performs, looks great from the pics : )

hmm with my medium yielding hawaiian skunk... i'd say lookin at around 1.5lbs. obviously wayyyyyy more could be had with a high yielding strain, which i have none of lol. hooray potency an originality! :p

thanks mustahd :) goin mcgyver is a great way as long as whatever was made from the rubberband an paperclip is fully functional hehe.

always go cheap an maximize yourself! i've done this for years throughout the hobbies, overclock a cheaper cpu to faster than the most expensive retail one! why pay when you can make! of course sometimes gotta cough it up, like for said emergency hood (homemade cooltube not big enough for 1k) and light mover (you engineer onea those! p.i.t.a!). it's also about time i did a homemade water chiller for ya folks with my watercooling background ;)

the thing i like about this setup is its customizability, can use different size tubs or different amounts to fit absolutely any space or light :) oh an that it's dirt cheap ;) i promise i'll get a step by step DIY done! soooon.....

$1000

$200

hmmm the green looks the same! but i saved hundreds and got more sites. :)

dude im all for mcguyverin it! anyway to save a buck or two and im in! hey i'd like to see your homemade water chiller idea, i made a diy chiller myself out of a standard water cooler. works excellent so far, been running about 5mos! steady temps within 4degrees constantly only probs is my setup is under 20 gals, not really for the bigtymers! lol

keep it green!

Here's a kona shot grown from Ralphies seeds, by a pal of mine. I got the bud for testing purposes
Mad sativa pheno, almost hazy. It's was 90% head, very tasty and fruity.
My pals done two runs wid the konas and loves em! :lurk:
My only complaint was that it could have been trimmed better :bat:
