After another 10 days of mixed weather - half sunny, half stormy.
Jarilla #4 Jarilla #3 It now has pre-flowers big enough to identify as male. I will water this plant just enough to survive the summer heats - it doesn't need to get big. Hopefully I'll manage to make some crosses with its pollen in the autumn.

Guatemala
I'm very happy to have my first plant ever with pink/magenta pistils. Last year I grew 2 Panama plants, a friend of mine grew 37 Panama plants, and none of them had colored pistils, despite the numerous photos on the forums of Panama "red" phenos with pink/purple pistils. My friend grew these Panamas indoors, where the purpling of the pistils is said not to be so expressed. But my Panama red didn't get the colors even in the cold outdoors. Its pistils only got reddish right before dying. I was wondering what prevents the purpling of pistils in my environments, until now... All preflowers on the Guatemala (small new and old withering ones) are lush magenta, which the camera captures only faintly:

Hi yoss,
Great healthy plants as usual. Seems to me this year your plants are not so branchy, do you think it's related to genetics or possibly weather? Or maybe i have a wrong impression ![]() Cheers

Hey, you are right, the plants are more columnar, especially the Jarilla and Peyote. The weather definitely has a role, because we've been having a quite rainy season so far, respectively less sun. Usually the soil is very dry by the middle of June, not this time.
But it's not just the weather. I think the Jarilla is like the Oaxacan strains which, I read, are more columnar because the plants have adapted to being grown in a field very close together. I hope Jarilla #4 will soon get tired of growing upwards (it's about 2.20 meters now) and develop the branches. By the way, we'll be having 2 stormy days and after that the forecasts are for true summer coming. So, I expect real growth the following 2 weeks.

Hehe, I was thinking similarly a week ago looking at your garden - that this year you are taking the size lead
Actually, I'm not aiming at the biggest plant this year because I have more than enough stash for a few years, and so I started my seeds later than usual and am not growing at my prime spot. Now I have tomatoes and cucumbers there and they are very happy in the soil that I've enriched for several years ![]() Anyways, this Jarilla wants to get tall and will be hard to beat in this regard The NepJam will have competition, hehe.

We are having the first heat wave of summer, with the winds carrying yellow-orange dust from Sahara. I started watering, where Jarilla #4 is watered by hand with ambient-temperature water (that has stayed under the sun), that's also how I treat the tomatoes and cucumbers. And the other 3 plants being behind a fence from me, are watered from distance with a hose with cold tap water.
A few days ago, after the last storm, I found Jarilla #4 bent to its north side. It had been supported against falling to the south, as my plants usually do, bending towards the light. Now the plant has another support string added, against the south winds. Jarilla #4 This plant is seriously lanky. Huge internodes that are not so obvious on the photos because of the big leaves. I really like how the leaves get thinner and have this American subtle serration. The leaf shape reminds me of the Haze I grew in 2012, the Haze had different structure though:

Some photos from 2 days ago. Jarilla #3 which is close to the Guatemala is not visible on the photos because I cut the top 3/4ths of the plant as I don't need a big male.
Jarilla #4 The vertical growth has slowed, the plant is about 2.7 meters high, but the branches started to bush out. And from the back (north) side of the plant: Both Jarilla #3 and #4 seem liked by the local stem borers, unlike Guatemala and Peyote Purple, which seem unaffected:
