Hi guy's,
Just on the end of my first grow and just started to cure.....all going well, only problem is my buds stink.
I'm not talking the nice bud smell we all know and love. This is a rank smell!
The question is is this normal as I have no frame of reference?
If so how long till it starts to smell normal?
If not is there anything I can do to improve the smell??

Uh Oh. What exactly does this odor you detect smell like? Is it an ammonia type of smell - mildew smell - fishy smell? If you smell something along those lines more than likely what you are smelling is decomposition - bad news for you. If this is indeed the case for you stop the curing cycle immediately. Take them out of your curing jars, and take a step backward by re-drying. This might take some of the odor away but not all of it - It's the best thing you can do. Bummer man. The potency of your buds have probably been tainted - taste and smell too obviously. Next time do your best to dry your herb until the stems crack in half no problem....then start the curing process. You'll avoid future problems of this sort by taking that route. Sorry to hear about your bad news man. Best of luck. P.S. If after re-drying you still find your buds as unattractive smelling, you might want to consider just turning your whole harvest into BHO, or bubble hash. Peace.

some strains smell like shit though. ive come across some that smelled like catpiss, rotten meat, old gym socks, and a few other not so pleasant smells.

if their not completely dried than yes mold is what your looking at my friend, ive also smelt some killer weed which has smelt some what unpleasant, but from the sounds of it, ide immagine it being mold, jarred up too early, trial and error my friend good luck-FG

well bollocks.!.......but on the bright side I didn't start to dry all my plants so I've got a few which I can leave for a while longer.

Look on the bright side, you got some bud that is prime for butane extraction.

i've seen people adding peals of lemon / oranges to the curing jars to add a somewhat "good smell", all tho sometimes the peals made it smell even worse.

ALWAYS always dry your buds properly before putting it into a curing jar.
especially due to the fact you live in the UK, i bet it takes some time to dry properly with your weather.
dry the buds in a dark dry room with lots of air movment, start curing only when the branches snap easily, making this crunchy frosty noise. make sure to check the inside of the top colas are dry as well.

when you cure the buds, just like you dry them keep them in a cool dark room,
in the first coulpe days of curing i usually leave the jar's lid open for 30min+ to give the buds some fresh air.

by the way- did you trim the bud after drying? if you haven't, what you smell might be the rank dry leaf smell mixed with the buds smell. dry leaf smells like really concetrated green tea. that i believe could give out a pretty damn rank smell in a closed curing jar.
if that's the problem, take out all the leaf out of the jar and keep curing the buds as they are.

I left them to dry for a long time until the stalks snapped with no problem at all if anything I thought I might have left them to long as the curing seems to have no effect what so ever. There was no air movement but it was a cool dark place........The bud had a lot of leaf in it so I suppose it could be down to that.....I was guessing mould but I can see no clear sign of that...........It's pissed me off but such is life....I've got two more plants drying now and I'm leaving them on longer just in case but I think I might be on a lost cause with this batch.
Anyhow gonna plan my next....get back on the horse and all that.
