Hops and cannabis
starting to look into growing hops in the near future with the ultimate goal of getting better at growing cannabis on a large scale and hopefully using that knowledge gained at growing hops for growing cannabis when it becomes legalized.
Just a thought. |

I was a home brewer for quite a while until my shoulders and back became useless. I still have all of my equipment and am working on my health to get back to the things I enjoyed, to include brewing. Growing hops is a great option. They are often in short supply because the major brewers buy them up, and command premium prices.

Have you seen the hop farmers on 131? They have a field full of telephone poles and wires to support hops. Not sure how they harvest.
Funny uuber, I used to homebrew as well. My wife got me a kit when I had to retire. That morphed into wine in a year or two, then I went gung ho over making wine, including using three oak barrels made with Hungarian oak. I sold my stuff several years back tho. I still have lots of bottles in my celler, mostly all dry reds, but at one time had over 400 full. And I might enjoy a bottle a week, if that now days. And then it's only paired with the proper food. Not a great hobby if you don't drink much, but it was fun. I think all that energy goes into my weed now though. |

Just some info for you. Hops and marijuana are actually related. They are the only 2 plants in the same genus or something. I grow both and used to make microbrew and it was a fine hobby, but all the supply stores closed down. Anyway the hops get 0 care. I string them in the spring so they can climb up and throw a little water on them. My MMJ takes more care especially when I grow indoors.

Same family…Cannabaceae. Brewing is fun and have made both beer and wine. Last I made was some hard cider, will end up being more like apple wine since I put an air lock on it.

I think you can still get supplies at Webberville, where the Michigan Brewery is. I ran with a homebrew club in the Bay City, Saginaw, Frankenmuth area and it is still active. One of the members opened his own microbrewery in Bay City.
Hops are indeed in the same family or genus as cannabis. I would not use the latter for brewing, because hops are sooo good. I still have equipment enough to brew five cases at a time, and there is kegging equipment too. I'm making good headway with my health controlling my pain and being more active, and hope to get back to it. I am at the point where I have put cannabis aside because of my improvement, but will continue to support its use, knowing how it helps when we need it. |
