There's a longstanding tradition, in Canada, of blaming the U.S. for a lot of things, one of which was for the prohibition of various drugs, like Cannabis. And that for various reasons, anybody wanting to trade with the U.S. had to at least make a show out of stamping out drugs.

However, as I've gotten older, I've questioned a lot of longstanding prejudices handed down to me by the yokels I grew up with.

It occurred to me as I was watching the movie, mr.nice, that I might be wrong, and maybe I should research the subject., and that maybe It was England or some other country that started it.

Finding a world timeline has been difficult though, the first instance I can find of prohibition is 1911 - Massachusetts

Thoughts, opinions on the influence of the U.S. in world marijuana prohibition?

nah it's long known fact that the reason weed is illegal worldwide is because of the usa and their pressure on the UN.

Canada started it in 1909 when Van City made opium dens illegal...
Since MJ was also used they were lumped together & made illegal simultaneously.

My reference is The Pot Book.

Im sure there are online recurrences that have this history as well.

Hey I looked that up, and nope, Cannabis wasn't added to the opium and drugs act

till 1923

short answer...yeah, it's mostly our fault. as for the UN...well, if we quit paying the bills for those whiners, they would shut up and go home. if the US says "fuck this shit!" tosses their hands up & legalizes, probably 75 to 90 % of the other countries would do so within 5 years or so. is spite of recent floundering, this is a huge market.
