Korean natural farming method
Does anyone here follow the practices? I've been wanting to try this. My only question to getting started is can I start my rice in the ground to collect the BIM in the dead of winter? In the books I've read they say in cooler weather but nothing so much about the dead of winter. I can wait till spring if need be but I'd like to get it started now if possible.

my worms absolutely love their fermented food!
you dont even have to go outside to prepare your culture either, this is how i did mine take your rice and cook it with half the water of a normal preparation 1 cup rice 1 cup water place rice on a folded piece of newspaper and place it of top of the soil/stuff in your worm bin for 1 week after the week is up , it should be covered in fluffy white moldy goodness as well as other colorful blooms you do want to watch for black mold-not what you are looking for if you dont have a worm bin yet, start the culture in a stand of bamboo or even under a tree in your yard , monitor it if its cold outside , perhaps maybe bury your container level to the ground. cover with a towel or cheesecloth and some leaves and detritus do this till your rice is fully bloomed and there you have your culture good luck and happy bokashiing

Maybe I should of clarified dead of winter meaning snow on the ground. I know how and what to do. Just don't know if it's possible to do starting from nothing in the dead of winter.

Nevermind, I finally found someone who actually uses the technique.
No. You can't get started in the dead of winter following traditional methods starting from nothing. See how simple that was to answer. Clear and to the point. |

spring is the best time to gather for bio-life. not early spring but once things are started good & everything is vigorous

taggin in just incase this thread becomes a general place to discuss KNF.
i use some fermented plant juices and i'v made bim in the past. i dig the focus on foraging and DIY. i'd guess your biological populations will likely be reduced or even altered by extreme weather. plus you'd need a pick ax to get a chunk out of the ground where i am ![]() check out @the_naturefarmer on IG he is a big proponent of dr. cho's methods and seems happy to talk at length about his methods.

you could check your potential in your pots by this method.
if you think your fungal or bacterial populations are low...bury some rice in your pots and check back in a week or so to see what's growing. i think other grains will work too. justify whether or not you need to even do this. (not that it would hurt anything)....

Imo - indigenous micro organisms.
You will find ways to culture different species, then take then though 4 stage process levels. Find, feed, expand, bla bla bla. Its awesome actually, one can get a super active, major diverse soil with these methods.
