Looking for a trimming machine for consumer use
Hey guys.. Im coming up on my first harvest and because of my logistics, I am looking for an alternative to hand trimming. My garden isnt huge.. 8 plants. Im not leaning either way on wet vs dry, I just want a device of some sort that can help out. Security is my main concern which is why I want to get it done quickly and without bringing in anyone else.
Ive been looking at the wet trimmers that look like oversize salad spinners and Ive also been looking at The Magic Trimmer. Toms Tumbler looks interesting as well if I go the dry route. I dont mind spending the money and I dont have time to DIY something but I dont want to spend a zillion dollars on something thats just for my own use. Im growing just to satisfy my own needs. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wish I could do it by hand but again time, location and security are concerns. Thanks! |

For the cost and damage (inevitable), and considering the amount to trim...
Suck it up. Fiskars are all you need. Hang and dry trim if you don't want to feel rushed. There is no top shelf trim machine, just different styles of ugly bruised golf balls. |

Sucking it up isnt an easy thing to do when you work 60 hours a week, live in a non legal state and have to deal with security of your spot. Trust me, Id love to suck it up but I just cant invest that kind of time in trimming and I dont really have the lighting to do that at my spot anyway.
Perhaps letting things dry and then just finger trimming? Im not looking for "top shelf", Im looking for "good". Im not going to be distributing any of my meds so I really dont need to impress people. |

C'mon princess, get your go on
![]() Such a prick. Dry trim is much less demanding. Once it's close just do as you say, finger trim. |

Depends on your needs/preference.
Wet trim is usually preferable to make a quick removal of product and all the muckluck surrounding that end of the business. Chop, trim, dry and go. A lot of labour in a short window. For the amount you're dealing with, if you want to go wet just chop and trim what you can do in a night. Ripping main colas first will allow lowers a few days to finish while you work through the gravy. Dry trim is much less demanding re: no rigid time line or handling concerns. Knock the room down, hang whole plant or branch, fan leaf on or off, etc. Use a controlled environment and start trimming once she's dry enough to jar. But no fresh scissor hash ![]() That's just my opinion, skewed as I prefer dry myself. Makes for a prettier flower to my eye. |

When you don't care about what the end product looks like, you're in a good position, because you can just trim the big leaves and not care much about the tiny leaves. I'm in the same boat. I grow only for myself and my wife. Our friends only ever see our buds when we are smoking them out, and even then it's not like I hand buds to people to check them out up close and personal. So the point is, no one sees my buds. I can afford to do a little lazier of a hand trim than the commercial growers would have to do. Honestly, I've discovered the best way to be lazy and not get overwhelmed by trimming is to do a dry trim, not fresh. After the buds are dry but before curing them, just put on some disposable surgical gloves and start pulling the big fan leaves off, by hand, no scissors involved. Then just start lightly pulling at the smaller sugar leaves and you'll be amazed to see how easily most of them come off without using and scissors. Then, if you really want to, you can pull out the fiskars and get rid of the remaining leaves. Truth is, I rarely ever have to use scissors on my buds. Manicuring the way I just described, I can go through a QP in two hours, so a pound would take about 2 half-days, which isn't bad. I just make it a movie marathon and park myself on the couch.
Here's an example of what my buds look like after trimming my lazy way:

You are not going to find a "consumer" trim machine worth a shit. DO NOT buy a salad bowl style trimmer. It will rip your buds apart and you will be very sad that you A: spent the money on that trimmer and B: ripped your hard work to shreds.
I know this from experience. Many years ago had a situation come up and panicked and bought one. I threw it away the next day... I agree with Mikell. Dry trimming is much preferred but if you are in a rush wet trimming goes real quick since the leaves are still turgid and will still look good and keep the integrity there. I grew in non legal states for years with a full time job as well. Don't rush through this part. You have already taken months of risk. Whats a few more days? |
