Hi everyone.
Well heres the score: I'm just coming up to my second ever harvest. Its White Widow from the white label seed co. Last time around, growing from the seeds, after i culled the males, i had one nice female to flower out. so i did. Only i had to harvest her early because i had to move house. Anyway, when she was drying she seemed to dry too fast (~3days) so i started to cure her. The thing is the whole lot smelled really sweet, literally. No ganja smell, just tooth tinglingly sweet. I thought maybe this was because it hadnt been cured, but i never got the chance to test this as i smoked her before she had a chance to cure.(it was only a few ounces!) When i smoked it it tasted fine. The smoke even smelled like weed. but just sniffing the weed, it just smelled like dry grass. okay, now here i am, about a week and a half away from a LARGE harvest off her clones and a branch accidently (ahem!) breaks off. again, the whole wet bud smells really sweet - like a flower from my garden, say. so i let it dry for a few days and it smells nothing like weed. What I'm trying to get to is this: Is this because of no cure? Will a cure for say a month give me my much sought after weed smell? or might it be this strain? Help time is running out until chop day! Thanks! |

in my experience grassy bud smells usually point towards a too early harvest ... the leaf smells dominate the resin scents...the WW's I've grown always benefit from harvesting later rather than earlier...let those WW's go a few weeks longer than last time and I bet you'll harvest twice the resin..
Widows are called WHITE because at harvest time they should be covered in frost..if your WW's are not white and totally resiny then wait a few weeks...don't worry about feeding them in the last week or so if in soil, let the big leaves fall and the others yellow, that's how you grow WW! like most strains, WW really resins up in the last few weeks, so don't pick early ....for a rough guide : most WW are best picked after 9 ~ 11 weeks of 12/12..the smoke from White Widow should sit you back frozen in the chair and all you can say is "bam-ba-lam, that's strong ganja!" WW has good shock appeal to lay on some "know it all mo-fo" who brags about how no bud is too strong for them....lol....and another one bites the dust! lol..another big mouth lightweight bites the carpet Last edited by Chamba; 07-18-2006 at 01:19 PM.. |

Thanks a lot for that. That really helped me. Ill wait a while longer before i harvest. I'm on day 59 now. Ill give her a few more weeks, see what happens. There is no point waiting all this time to chop early in the end.
One thing. I'm growing in Hydro (dwc). should i just give them pure water now then for the last few weeks? Cheers. |

the sweet dank smell going to a grassy smell is normal, it goes from dank to grassy back to dank throughout the cure, your just smoking all yours before a nice cure.
to get the most out of the "WHITE" strains you want to let them go 70 days. you'll see a major difference in resin production in the next 11 days!! |

I have no experience with hydro growing...but I'd suggest you dilute the solution the roots are swimming in between now and harvest from the current fert strength down to plain pH adjusted water
how long until harvest? .....I met Soma in Amsterdam and he mentioned about harvesting "if growing a new strain or in doubt - wait a week, then harvest !" which is good advice....with WW, I'd keep the scissors away until at least week 10 then harvest in stages a plant's nutrient needs gradually decrease in the last trimester of flowering..so feeding it more than it needs will only affect the taste and the bud will burn poorly leaving a dark coloured ash..cough cough...tssk tsssk, ..if the plant was grown with the correct nutrient level during it's life the ash in your pipe or jay will be a light colour/ whitish grey and you'll taste the resin not themacro and micro nute residues. there is a theory that the increase in cancer deaths from cigarette smoking in past 50 years is due to excessive chemical ferts and other additives included during the cigarette manufacturing process....not from the tobacco itself.....tobacco didn't cause tumors or cancers a hundred or 50 years ago...but it did cause emphasema and other serious health problems etc..the dramatic increase in cancers related to tobacco smoking is a relatively new thing. I'd guess that in ten or twenty year's time we will see, sadly, an increase in cancer rates from heavy smokers of commercially grown cannabis due to the excess chemical ferts that the cash croppers shovel at their crops (and there's the excess insecticides etc to consider as well!) ...which is a great reason to grow your own using simple organic ferts (and by organic, I dont mean the shit that comes in an expensive bottle with a fancy label...I'm talking real home made organics!) ...people have smoked ganja for decades without damage to lungs or an increase in cancers (this proof is documented in Jamaica studies for example)...but the reliance on nutrients derived from petroleum that all cash croppers use now may increase cancer rates for cannabis smokers..time will tell there's another reason to grow your own herbs....... I miss the strong bang that WW gives..next time I'm in Am'dam I'm gonna visit Gypsy's seedboutique on Singel and buy myself a pack or two the Wid! the Wid's I grew were almost too strong for most occasions!.......but it's good to have something with a strong bang in the stash box every now and then! Going to the grassy/ hay smell is at the point the chlorophyl is breaking down. A proper cure (min 1 month) should produce some nice smelling herb. I agree with the harvest window of WW. She stayed in my garden for 2 years and just when most would harvest i would wait two weeks. That last 2 weeks is the icing on the cake.

I almost had a catastrophe today!!
We're in the middle of a heat wave over here and i havent been able to check my plants for a few days due to work. Some of my plants have got some pretty bad heat damage.... some of the popcorn buds dried up. Most of the buds themselves are alright but the leaves on them have dried up. Spent hours in my growroom today fixing everything and minimising the damage. Looks like i only just averted a disaster!! This is still gonna be a KILLER harvest though! (some of them buds look sooooo good!) drool!

let your buds cure for at least 2-3 weeks before smoking. I find the 3 week stage to be perfect. The buds are nice and dry all the way through and are more aromatic and tastier. They get better as they sit in the jar. So from harvest it will take at least 3 weeks until you can smoke.
