Back cross to lock in traits?

I am planning to back cross F2 into F1 generation as I lost the F1 mother parent. I want to try to lock in some desirable traits. I have read that the first back cross will result in a new generation that is 60% similar to the F1 parent. Is this true? Thanks

Looks like your on the right track Bombay. I would first start with a list of traits that you want to lock in. Backcrossing can help to focus desirable traits but can also bring undesirable traits if proper selection is not done. In theory the proportions of genes recovered from the recurrent parent are :

F1=50%
BC1=75%
BC2=87.5%
BC3=93.8%

Good luck with your project!

It also depends on the zygosity of the plants used for the traits desired. Heterozygous genes will give different results then homozygous ones. If the parent that is backcrossed is heterozygous for the trait desired you will never achieve stable results.

Hey Captan: Backcrossing is breeding the 2nd generation back into the parent plant (usually female). Now a days the definition is a bit looser. It used to be strictly the original parent but now it can be the parental generation. I lost the F1 female so I am going to collect the best pollen from all the F2 seeds I am growing and hit the best F1 female from the parent generation I will grow out and hope for the best. Does that sort of make sense?

I figure,
If you made F2s using the deceased mother you would be more likely to find something more similar to her in the F2 seeds.
By back crossing to another mother your adding more genetic material to sift thru.
Find males & females that resembled the original mom then continue to F3.

I am thinking of backcrossing a male multiple times. I have a Kryptonite OG male I plan on crossing with Bubba or Dr Who, and then backcrossing the progeny back to the Kryptonite to lock in traits for potency. So instead of selecting males to backcross to the female, I will select females to backcross to the male every time. It should be fun.

LMFAO!
You should do some reading.
Start w the post right above yours then go find as much info as possible about back crossing to lock in traits. It does not work by blindly back crossing multiple times. For one, if you Parent plants aren't homozygous, your back crosses never will be either.

Pay particular attention to posts made by Chimera, Sam Skunkman & Tom Hill. I'm not sure that there is a more experienced group of folks that are passionate about their lifes endeavors.

I always heard the rule was for every Bx you breed that male to the female from the previous Bx generation that best represents the traits you want. That way if the trait is het. You can at least TRY to up the % on those desirable het. genes with out building up unwanted receive genes.
