Black Widow
I am starting this thread to confirm the plants I just grew out are true Black Widows. I am skeptical that they are genuine for a couple reasons:
1. The packaging on MNS packs seems to be sealed Mylar type packaging. The seeds I bought were in a glass tube that was tucked into a paperboard packet. Did they previously use this type of packaging? 2. The plants did not meet descriptions or expectations. They were incredibly lanky sativa pheno plants. These unwieldy plants stretched ~10x in size when I flipped. I cut at 10-11 weeks, but they could have gone 2-3 more. Resin production is unimpressive and finished quality is poor. Nearly all had airy, open buds. I bought the seeds from the Conscious Collective in Hopland, CA in 2014. I have run some of these originals 3 times now hoping it was high heat that degraded my first crop; all subsequent crops have been identical let-downs. Let me know if you have any insights. Thanks.

G`day GH
1st impression is you were impatient . Those buds may have fattened up and gotten frosty if you let them mature ... My advice contact FX @ Mr Nice forum and talk to him . Thanks for sharin EB .

Woah, weird packaging. Haven't seen that before.
Elmer_Bud: Maybe, maybe. I definitely took them all early. They always went hermie in a room I am trying to breed other strains in, so that was an instant yank. I did let them go over 10 weeks though. Thanks for the tip ill check out their forum.

G`day GH
The straws are direct sales from the Mr Nice site . Usually a few extras too . Yes Widows can herm . They are very sensitive to light leaks and shading of their canopy . Light proof your tent if your using one . And lollipop the lower branches . Mango Widow is my choice from Mr Nice . Solid line with his flagship genetics mixed and reasonable price . Thanks for sharin EB .

A follow up note:
Weeks after deciding that the Black Widow was uninteresting to me and a probable dead end, a few things have intrigued me about it. 1. The smell improves significantly with a cure. It has an unassuming fruity sweet smell after drying. This looses the hay notes and grows very pungent after a few weeks cure. Open a jar and the whole room smells like it instantly. 2. The smoke is smooth: no harshness, no cough. Potency is good to high. 3. Most significantly, some of my more serious head friends have given praise and favorable remarks unsolicited (of course they don't have to deal with how it grows). In conclusion, my original negative reaction to this plant may have been, at least in part, a case of incorrect expectations: 1. This is at least a 12 week strain. 2. Resin production is average. 3. Phenotype is very Sativa. From marketing (including the main picture that MNS uses of a frosty as heck plant and claims of insane resin production) and its reputation I had an expectation of a plant I would love in Black Widow. Alas, my personal tastes are not aligned with the Widow. Despite this, some of its traits could improve other lineages in a way that agrees with my selection preferences.

There are 12 week phenotypes, but a lot of people overfeed which can cause things to take longer as well. It's sensitive. It's very sensitive to light leaks.
There are sickeningly frosty phenotypes that have major league potency. It is a sativa dom line, without question. My 12 week pheno can make old heads spin sideways and it yields truck loads. Also reeks like skunk and sweetness. Excellent smoke. Running another whole pack currently. But I only had one that took that long. The rest were around 10 weeks. The packaging they come in is Mylar with the logo etc. Inside they were in a plastic container if I remember correctly, lately I've been growing from his website though and he always sends them in the tubes shown above. |

crazyfool* -what types of phenotypes are you seeing, and how many would you say are keepers?
I am going to wait for an outdoor spot before planting Black Widow again. Give a wider seed pool a go.

well plants have a good variation, but taste, smell and potency is kinda standard.... a mellow mango for the more sativa feno, and a sweet one for the hybrid feno..... my keeper is a hybrid, not the most vigorous, nor the highest yealding one, but the only plant that kept the sweet taste from the begining till the end of a joint, strong pine smell on the buds, and sweet caramel taste.... truuly a amazing plant..... it was sad about my widows, because I was begining to think it was all hype, till I found this special girl
